Excellent work Hal!

A little catch up:

Yesterday: I ran an 8K (4.97 miles) race in the morning. I did fine. I was trying to keep it under control and I finished in around 38 minutes. A little faster than I had planned but that's alright. I finished in 101st place. Which is fine and all, but 99th sounds so much better.

The highlight of yesterday was the warm-up race. My daughter ran it with me. She had never run more than a mile and I could tell she was nervous about the 2 mile race. I ran next to her the entire time and we talked about the race. We talked about pacing and staying calm. She stopped once at the water stop and went right back tot he race when she was done with her water. She kicked butt. She crossed the finish line at the 21 minute mark with a huge smile on her face. It was fantastic. She wants me to find a 3 miler for her next. I will, but I'm going to let her bask in her glory for a little while. No need to rush it.

This morning: I met PMD at 5:45in the a.m. and we set out in the dark with our lights on. It was cold and foggy, making it difficult to see for this glasses wearing runner. We had to avoid puddles and two downed trees (I knew there had been storms last night but I didn't realize they had been that bad.) We went 20 miles and it felt good. We had our usual last-mile-sprint to the finish. I am feeling very good about finishing strong lately. Fun run; after the sun came up.

Yesterday: 6.97
Today: 20.01
Week: 53.49
Total: 565.74

Week 14 in the books. 42 days to NYC. I can almost see it.

Well done pedro...and congrats to your daughter! I should get my son running more.

Solid, hilly 5-miler this morning. Much colder than I had expected. I was definitely underdressed.

Week 16.

Scheduled to run 4 easy miles today. I went almost 5. It was actually a little cold this morning.

Today: 4.97
Total: 570.71

With this run, I passed 6,000 miles since I started tracking my runs on dailymile 2.75 years ago.

I have to do some shifting around this week. I ran 10 hard miles today. Once again, I wasn't really planning on it when I started. I was planning on 9 easy miles but it just kind of took off. I'm not sure if that is good or not. Fall is definitely here as the crisp air felt great.

Tomorrow I am (planning on) running 6 easy miles and then 20 slow miles on Friday. Off on Saturday and 10 more on Sunday morning.

Today: 10
Week: 14.97

Funny how that happens. I always seems to exceed my scheduled miles by at least a half mile.

Fall is most certainly here in New England. It's been cold the last 3 mornings. I wore dry-fit tights under my shorts yesterday and today. 4 easy miles this morning. So psyched for my scheduled off day tomorrow!

Good taper advice on my local running shops website...

Nice job, Hal. You're going to kick butt.

PMD drives me crazy. He asked me to move my schedule all around so we could run our long run together this morning and then he bailed at the last minute. I went ahead and did it anyway. I ran too fast for the first 10 miles or so, so I felt it the last 5 miles. It was kind of miserable, but it's done for the week. I just have 10 miles on Sunday to finish off the week.

I'm looking forward to the off day tomorrow.

Yesterday finished up Week 16 for me. 5 weeks to go. I am in the middle of the "monster month" with 2 consecutive 50+ mile weeks. I'm aching a bit, but nothing too bad. I get a little break this week, as I am scheduled to run about 45, with a long run of 15 on Sunday. Next week is the biggest week of training, finishing up with a 22 miler.

Yesterday I ran 11.27. It was a pleasant run and the weather was nice. There were tons of people on the trail at 6:45 in the morning.

Yesterday: 11.27
Week: 52.35
Total: 618.09

Week 16 in the books. I'm taking a rest today and a short one tomorrow.

34 days to go.

Finished up my week with 12 miles yesterday. I've said it before, but it's crazy to think that I'm winding down by only doing 12. Felt good, but it was a busy weekend so I was happy when I was done. OFF! today, and then 4/3/4/8 this week. Two weeks to go from yesterday!

I was thinking the same thing last Friday. We've come a long way NB!

Turned 42 yesterday. I celebrated with a birthday beer run to VT. Picked up a fresh case of Heady Topper at Alchemist in Waterbury. It's going to make a hell of a victory celebration on the 12th! No alcohol until then.

6 easy miles today. Feeling light and fast. Spectacular weather!

I ran 9 miles this morning, with 4 of them at "10K" pace. Which for me is about 7minutes/mile. Now I don't know if that's what I ran, but probably pretty close. I made a mistake by eating breakfast before I ran. Running with a pit in my stomach is never good.

I thought I was going to enjoy this taper period....but, it sucks! These short runs are making me feel so inadequate. As if I should be out doing much more. On top of that, all the anxiety of getting hurt or sick is driving me crazy. I can't help but walk around treating myself like a china doll....avoiding stairs, moving slow, gobbling vitamin C. I'm a freak! 8 days!!

Anticipation driving you crazy? Sounds about right! At this point your runs are much more about staying calm and sane than actual training. Focus on your breathing and trying to keep a calm, steady pace. Follow your plan, but I'd make sure I'm running pretty slowly at this point.

I ran 8 this morning. I was supposed to be off today but Saturday is going to be tough. Better now than never.

Well pedro, I took your advice and did a nice slow pace today. 9:10 avg. Beautiful morning. Warm, but still cool and comfortable. It's beginning to look like these daytime highs in the 70's will continue until race day next weekend. I'm almost hoping it gets a little colder. Felt pretty good today. No major pains. Fighting a cold/sore throat though.

Nice picture, Hal. A few miles into my half marathon course there are similar views. I really liked it, thought about going back, but never did. I do just abou all of my running leaving from my house. Today I did my last long run -- 8 miles following one of my standard loops.

I didn't get to run as early as I had hoped because I was up all night with an upset stomach. That turned into really bad news because it's hot today. No, not second strainght week of 90-plus degrees hot, but still hot. I was scheduled to run 15, but I ended up doing 16.64. I wanted to see if One of my regular bathrooms would be open or furloughed. It was furloughed. I went behind a tree!

Today: 16.64

Way to go pedro! Toughing it out.

Do you ever partake in this sort of thing?....

The Candy Stand

Located on mile 22

If your energy is flagging during the last part of the ING Hartford Marathon, you’ll find a burst of tasty treats and motivation waiting for you at The Candy Stand. Located on Mile 22, Candy Stand Volunteers will be cheering and handing out dark chocolate, Jolly Ranchers®, "fun-sized" Snickers® bars and a host of mini-sized sugary delights for race participants to munch on as they head toward the finish line. Flat cola and orange soda will also be on tap.

A visit to The Candy Stand will bring smiles to all registered racers who stop for a second and choose a snack (or three!) to help savor the sweet joy of finishing up the ING Hartford Marathon.

I can't imagine craving a snickers bar at mile 22. But, some flat cola might hit the spot.

3 miles today. What a joke. Though, I must admit, my body feels better than it has in weeks.

Forecast for Saturday is partly cloudy, 63. Sounds just about right. Certainly much more appealing than last year's 32 degrees.

Week 18

Ran 6.19. I had to run later int he day than normal. I usually don't have "to go" when I am running (prior proper planning and all that) but man did I have to go today. I hit one of the porta-johns along the trail and it was a magical experience. The stall itself was almost clean. There were air fresheners and plenty of toilet paper. The best part was there was actual hand sanitizer in the dispenser. That never almost never happens. It was great.

The run was fine.

Today: 6.19
Total: 670.48

I would prefer this, but I found during my longer runs at 15+ I needed more than just water (and gels). Not sure if it was the heat, the amount I was sweating, or both, but my routine has been to start with 50/50 water and Gatorade, and then I'd usually buy more of something along the way. For my race I think I'll start with a bottle of 50/50 water and Gatorade, see how I feel along the way, and alternate between water and Gatorade at the water stops later on.

Did 3 miles today. Great running weather. I'm planning to do 2 tomorrow and Thursday, and will then take two days OFF! before race day.

WARNING: Below is a photo of my right long toe. It's getting ready to fall out. Kind of gross, but par for the course. If you look carefully to the middle toe to the right of the purple toe nail, you'll see a toe nail re-growing. There's a guy in the book Born to Run that had his toenails removed on the theory they were always falling out anyway.

The good news...I feel fairly good. My cold symptoms have subsided and my right knee feels better than it has in months. The bad news...my right hip is really bothering me. It's been sore for a couple days now. It doesn't seem to bother me too much while running...more post-run. Hopefully, two days off will be enough healing.

Excellent work, Hal. I'm looking forward to hearing about your race. If you feel a little stir crazy the day before the race, don't hesitate to put the running shoes on and do a very slow two miles. It can really help your state of mind.

Hal wrote:What kind of energy bar would you suggest for post-race? I hate bananas.

Chocolate milk or a soy protein drink of some kind. You want some protein.

I have run three marathons and I have never been able to get any food down immediately after a race. I tried a bagel after my first two, but literally could not swallow anything solid.

I ran 10 miles of Yasso's 800s today. I ran them on my treadmill. It starts with a 2 mile warmup and then a half mile at 7:19 per mile. Repeat that 7 additional times. That left me with 2.25 miles of recovery/cool down at the end.

Pain in the ass, but they are a great workout.

Which one? Like you, I've avoided beer during my final two weeks of training -- including at an Oktoberfest party (lots of lime seltzer for me). I have a 4-pack of Guinness Red Harvest in the fridge, but I'm not convinced it will be great, so I'm thinking about a Firestone Walker's Porter.

Right now, for stouts, I have Founders Breakfast Stout, Stone Espresso Imperial Stout, AleSmith Speedway Stout and North Coast Old Rasputin. I also have a case of Heady Topper DIPA, 6-pack of Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, 6-pack of NEBCO Sea Hag IPA, 4-pack of Lawsons/Otter Creek Double Dose DIPA, 4-pack of Deviant Dales DIPA and various stragglers. Going to be a fun celebration on Saturday night :)

Woo hoo! As of today, I'm here too! Did a quick 2 miles today and felt good. All that's left now is to rest, continue to carb load, and try to relax! Oh, and those 26.2 on Sunday. 8-)

Woohoo! Good luck. I'm started to freak out a little. Didn't think I'd be this nervous. Feeling good, except for my hip. It's giving me pain. Hope it eases up by Saturday morning. Going to be a long 26.2.

There's a fresh pack of OREO's in my kitchen cabinet. I will likely eat the entire pack on Saturday evening. And wash it down with a fantastic chocolate/coffee stout.

I think I might like vanilla Oreos even more than OG Oreos.

We should run a 10K sometime.

Today: 10
Week: 16.19
Total: 680. 48

10k is probably a little much for me. My younger son joined the cross country team. He's got a 5k coming up that I may run with him. Six k is my ideal distance.

Yesterday: 4 miles
Today: nothing yet
This week: 8 miles

You're already up to 4 miles. Another 2.1 will be a piece of cake. Go for it!

Good luck guys. You both have put yourself in position to do well. I will pass on the two pieces of race day advice I try to keep in mind.

1) Run Your Race! Don't worry about anyone else, including that cute girl in the pink shorts who just passed you. Let her go. You have enough to think about on you own.

2) Fix it Now! If you have an issue that can be fixed, fix it as soon as possible. Loose shoe? Re-tie it. Gotta go? Hit the next can. Things don't just go away. Take care of your problems.

Bonus: Protect your nipples! Nip guards, body glide, vaseline. What ever you use carry a little extra with you.

Good Luck!

Hunter, If you can do 4 miles semi-comfortably, I imagine the adrenaline of a race will get you over the top for a 10K. Are you around Thanksgiving? There's a good Turkey Chase on Thanksgiving morning in Bethesda.

Yesterday: I ran 6.11 miles is a slight rain. It was fun and pretty painless.

Today: I was supposed to do 22 miles. PMD was supposed to join me, but bailed due to weather. Wimp. I set out in a serious down pour. There were tons of puddles that I ran right through. Making that decision early is really the best thing. You're wet. There is nothing you can do about it so just get over it. I met up with some guy I didn't know named Frank. He was running 11 in preparation for the Army Ten Miler next weekend. He was a nice guy who made me run faster than I wanted, although he claimed I was the one making him go faster than he wanted! He was from China and had a thick accent, making communication difficult but we managed. Hope to see him on the trail again sometime. The last 11 (and a half) miles were by myself and I ran slower and slower each mile. I picked up the pace a little at the end and my overall time was fine. Just as I was finishing, the sky opened up again and ducked into the car. The rain made my usual post-run walk not very appealing, so I bailed and I am paying for it now.

Yesterday: 6.11
Today: 23.03
Week: 45.33
Total: 709.62

I'm off tomorrow and I need to run 10 on Sunday morning.

How early does it start? We usually drive up to Philly Thursday morning.
