Interesting list. For the first time I can remember, I'm not actively obsessing over anything I can think of. I went through a solo Morrissey fixation a month or so ago, and a low level obsession with the Sex Pistols, Big Star, The Stooges, et al. is constant, but I'm not really buzzing about anything at the mo.

Just got an emerald green 8-string, which is markedly easier to play than my 12-string. Still sounds like a melodic freight train.

8 string bass?

Even 5 strings are unacceptable.

There's a bell curve with bass guitars. 5 and 6 strings are lame, but they gradually get cooler as string count goes up from there.
Blame Tom Petersson.

And also Nick Lowe. I agree about 5-string basses. Fender Bass VIs are acceptable but any other 6-string bass is not.

FALSE. If a Shergold Marathon six string was good enough for Peter Hook, it's good enough for the rest of you jokers.

Hmmm. I've never even heard of such a thing. I'm not going to have to buy another bass, am I? Frankly, it's getting harder and harder to keep my wife from figuring out how many I currently own.

Nah, just play high up on the neck through a Clone Theory and no one will know the difference.

Danelectro Longhorns are also worthwhile in the 6 string bass arena and are responsible for a lot of sounds from the '60s that people attribute to Fender Bass VIs.

VS, I've never known anyone as obsessed with guitars and guitar technology who has never(?) played in a band.

You fascinate me.

I have 'Brave Words' on (store-bought) cassette....wow. Haven't listened to them in ages (or thought about them too much for that matter).

When I'm interested in something, I tend to read as much as I can on the subject. You have no idea how much useless info I have in my head about things like vacuum tube types/brands/specs. It came in handy when I was buying NOS and used vintage tubes (online, and IRL before the internet), but these days it's pretty worthless.

I just saw the current lineup play in Brooklyn back in May. They were fantastic, as is their most recent material (a great live album called Somewhere Beautiful, a new studio album called Silver Bullets and a 12" EP single released for RSD earlier this year with a B-side of redone '80s tracks that are incredible). In addition to that, their label Fire has reissued Kaleidoscope World (their singles/stray tracks compilation) with bonus tracks and put out their '80s BBC Sessions. I was able to find the BBC Sessions on vinyl for a really good price in Atlanta last month and got the 12" via Discogs earlier this year, but want the others (they're pricy AF).
