well, here's my thing. U2 can write stuff that has balls (in their own manner) like "Wire," "Bullet The Blue Sky," "The Fly," "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me." even "Elevation." I also get that U2 can make some great emotional pop tunes like "Stay," "Baby Face" or modernized stuff off "All You That You Can't Leave Behind," but that track sounds like a whinny COLDPLAY song. After that, I enjoy the rest of the new album.
btw, "Vertigo" has a RAMONES influence. the main riff is Johnny Ramone's sliding E chord crossed with the Edge's usual ringing chords coupled with the strong vocals of Bono. Sure, after "Joshua Tree" and "Rattle And Hum," U2 went for more of an arena rock sound, but I do like the bigger sound the Edge puts out as well as once in a while he visits his trademark sound like on "City Of Blinding Lights."
I love U2 old and new and like on the other thread, I love "Pop" where as many people didn't think much of it.
