MLB BASEBALL 2014

Postby WrEtcH » Wed Jan 29, 2014 9:59 pm

I'm excited! Giants fan fest is this Saturday.

I'm one of those guys even if the Giants sucked and didn't win a World Series, I'd be excited over baseball season.

As a mets fan Harvey blowing out his arm took any wind out of the sails before things even began, looking forward to Thor coming up (Syndergaard) in july like Harvey and Wheeler did the 2 prior years, and also Montero coming up. Prob looking at third place at best this year but next year the mets are gonna have a absolute sick starting rotation.

Hey mean, what do you think? Seems like a lot of money

Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed on a six-year, $105 million contract extension, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.

Bailey, who posted an 11-12 record with a 3.49 ERA in 32 starts last season - including his second career no-hitter July 2 against San Francisco, would have been a free agent after this season if he hadn't signed an extension.

Bailey confirmed Monday morning that he and the team were "close" to a multi-year extension.

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/2014 ... ck_check=1

$17.5M seems reasonable (well, in baseball dollars anyway) for Bailey. He's a good pitcher, but I can't help but think his two no-no's inflate his value a little bit. Over the last couple of years his W/L record is actually a little bit worse than his peripherals would lead you to think. Good ERA+, HR/9 and WHIP.

Whatever, good for the Reds.

I'm hoping the Sox get Lester signed right after opening day. He says he'll take less money to stay with the Sox, so I hope that works out.

Spring Training games next week!

it's funny, I was going to be critical of the Reds signing Homer Bailey to that much money, but I had to back off since the Giants signed Matt Cain to triple figures too. Cain only topped out at 16 wins in 2012 and only won 8 games last year, but basically the Giants were paying him for 2 WS. Supply and demand I guess. The way some of the these pitchers are getting paid, Lincecum might seem like a bargain if he returns to form.

Cain is a better pitcher, and he is getting significantly more than Bailey. Bailey is a litte younger, right? Last year was a definitely a down year for him, and his team stinking (sorry WrEtcH!) didn't help, but I would expect Cain to bounce back.

last year was a weird year. they started off like WS contenders, then the starting pitching went in the tank, but the bats were scoring runs. then, the offense went into the toilet (the Giants usual weakness.) I blame it on when Pagan went down and there was a lack of a lead off presence. Everybody here is ready to make another run at it, but with the Giants, there are never any guarantees expect for maybe Posey.

That is...I don't even have the words. Vince Coleman had nothing on him (even in his prime). Maybe Lou Brock could have out-run him as he routinely stole home, but that's about it.

In a 19 year professional career, Lou Brock stole 938 bases. He stole home twice, both as the second leg of double steals. So, he had zero actual straight steals of home.

Given how many bases he stole, I'm surprised. I guess that was more legend and the fear he put into opposing pitchers and defenders (especially catchers) than reality. Anyway, that wasn't really my point.

How many times did Maury Wills and Rickey Henderson steal home?

According to this article, Henderson only did it once.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/b ... home_N.htm

This may not be the most reliable source, but it looks like Maury Wills only did it once, too.

hey pedro, just caught this today (call me late)

http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/post/_/ ... ortscenter

as a guy that watches baseball regardless who the teams are,it's hard to believe it's been TEN YEARS. where did the time go? definitely a historical moment that year and I'd like to believe the BoSox symbolically broke many droughts which included the ChiSox, Phillies and the Giants (sorry Cubs fans, it's still a long wait,) but getting back to that 1st pitch, it was typical of the character of that team to pull that off.

good to see.

That was great fun. I will always hold a soft spot for the 2004 team. I'm glad it was all cheers from the crowd, even for the guys who left under bad circumstances (Damon, Manny). Apparently Manny tracked down the traveling secretary he shoved in 2008 and apologized (privately and publicly) for that and the rest of his behavior on the way out of town. I loved that they had Foulke carry in the trophy. He is really the forgotten star of that team. He was unbelievable in the post-season.

After they won in 2004, I bought two bumper stickers celebrating the victory. One I put on my car immediately and the other I have kept in a safe place. I wanted to make sure that when my car dies and I get a replacement, I will still have a 2004 World Series Championship bumper sticker on it. 2007 and last year were great, by 2004 was special.

what an epic game last night and it was only the first game of the playoffs. I feel bad for all my A's friends, but I knew KC was no joke after they swept the Giants. Speaking of which, not liking the match up with the Pirates. Could be more of the same from last night except from the Pirates side.

i tuned into it right before the collapse in the 8th inning. A's whole season right there in that inning. back up catcher probably cost them the game in the end though.

both catchers were responsible. it's brutal when you give up a total of 7 stolen bases for the entire game.

didn't the first catcher go out in the 1st inning though? how many runs did he give up/lead to? like i said, i missed the first 7 innings and that was not on the highlights.
