What are you listening to right now?

If you are off today or working from home, what are you spinning?

Once my family leaves the house, I’m slapping on some recently received records I haven’t gotten to yet. Stay tuned for updates.

Working from home and listening to Radio Birdman's "Burn My Eye" EP (disc 2 of the Citadel reissue of Radios Appear). "I-94" is on now and I'm singing along.

I miss mixtapes. I also wish I had a nice cassette Walkman, especially since I don’t have a cassette deck in my stereo set-up right now.

Just put a new stylus on my TT and am spinning X’s See How We Are. I know it’s not particularly well regarded, but it was worth the $7.00 I paid to round out my X collection. I’m not sure I’ve actually listened to it before. It might not be the best X record, but so far, it’s pretty enjoyable.

EDIT: After listening to the whole record, I’d say it’s better than Ain’t Love Grand.

Now listening to And Nothing Hurt by Spiritualized. I found a UK copy from a US seller, and it sounds great. Reviews of the US pressing were mixed, at best. I might have to pop for the UK pressing of the next one. Even though my Fat Possum copies of the recent reissues are all pretty decent, I kinda wish Bella Union had done their own versions…

Just now finished the Misfits’ Walk Among Us Alternate Takes on nice yellow vinyl. Still available sealed with seam split for $12 at https://pukenvomitrecords.com/products/misfits-walk-among-us-alternate-takes-used-lp?_pos=37&_sid=d33017ce4&_ss=r. This is the “Plan 9 version” of WAU mastered from a promo cassette. Sounds just fine. A fun alternative to the official version. I gotta ask, where the fuck are these bootleggers getting their vinyl pressed? This is a better pressing than a lot of new official vinyl I’ve bought recently. How is it that they can get it right and some legit labels can’t? Mind boggling.

Cassette

Earlier this year when R.E.M. put out the original "Radio Free Europe" 7" reissue for their 40th anniversary, they did a bundle that included an R.E.M. walkman. I've definitely gotten my moneys worth.

I can’t see the entire pic on my phone screen, but I see the corner of In Through The Out Door. Very underrated record. It might be the worst LZ album, but even LZ’s worst is better than some bands’ best.

Last record of the day was Extractions by Dif Juz. This one sounded like smooth jazz to me in the ‘80s, but I absolutely love it these days.

I love both of those records deeply, but I know I'm in the minority. I paid about the same for each of them in the '90s, FWIW. I think they're underrated because of the weird production on each and plus Billy not being on SHWE, but if you can get past those things, they are full of absolutely incredible songs. Aside from the obvious ones like "Burning House of Love" or "4th of July" (both of which I LOVE), stuff like "Around My Heart," "My Goodness" and "Anyone Can Fill Your Shoes" and "Left and Right" are just tremendous IMO.

Back to the topic of this thread, though, I'm listening to the Australian version of Radio Birdman's Radios Appear (it's a 1984 repress on Big Time), which I picked up from a very nice seller in Brooklyn yesterday along with a copy of The Replacements' Tim on CD, which he threw in for free. I listened to that one before this.

The Flesh Eaters - A Hard Road To Follow

This record and band fucking rule. It’s perplexing that they aren’t held in the kind of esteem that other early L.A. punk greats are. These dudes are right up there with The Germs, Bags, and X in my book.

I don't listen to many podcasts, but the new season of YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS is all about Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. and it's pretty excellent. Turns out Dean's drunken gambler act was mainly an act. Dude didn't want to do much other than play golf and watch westerns on TV. Sammy's story is much more complicated.

There's a new song by Social Distortion (yet unreleased) they're playing at their live shows. I assume there will be a new album soon... "Tonight" is on the Daytona Beach concerts you can find on YouTube, which I'm listening to on an iPhone 12 ProMax through Apple Airpod Pros, but because they were a gift, not because I'm an Apple fanboi. Honest.
