The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow

As much as I love The Smiths’ proper albums, Hatful of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs might trump them all. I read something the other day that mentioned someone falling out of bed twice, and I immediately thought of “Reel Around the Fountain,” so it was inevitable that I would be listening to this soon.

Awesome. Maybe I’ll throw The Smiths on later. Never a bad idea.

The packaging on that is top notch too, from the foil imprint on the gatefold to the clear black swirl vinyl... that is how a deluxe reissue should be done.

All of this; already had the single Lp reissue (though it's technically an EP, but whatever) and the box set, but couldn't pass it up and SO glad I bought it. Kevin Gray should be whatever the equivalent of knighted is here for his mastering work.

Like an instrumental Cocteau Twins or a slightly more placid Dif Juz (from whom RG definitely borrowed quite a bit). Very nice if you need something pretty and chill in these trying times.

Perfect record. I have the CD, but I’m tempted to gamble on a vinyl pressing, of which there are several that seem to be pretty hit or miss quality-wise…

How's the CD? I have the vinyl, but would love to hear the CD version if it's not bricked. My favorite album of last year, too, but when I posted it in a jazz group on FB, it didn't go well.

Probably a bunch of motherfuckers with berets and goatees who are scandalized by the very minimal electronica polluting their precious jazz. That record is amazing. I’m definitely a basic bitch when it comes to jazz, but I would put Promises right up there with any classic jazz that you would care to mention. It’s the post-millennial A Love Supreme, whether those stooges acknowledge it or not.

This may be my favorite post in the history of this board. First off, thanks for that visual, and because of what you wrote and because others on here like drew have also shared their love of the album, I feel like we're all definitely on to something. I don't know if I'd go quite so far or describe it the same way, but that ALS comparison is intriguing. It hit me HARD from the first time I heard it, but for me it works as a modern ambient record, an acid jazz record (younger UK musician collaborating with an older American jazz artist), an electronica record along the lines of what Shepard did earlier (though I've yet to hear much of it; love the tracks I have heard, however) or what Four Tet, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, et al. typically do, not to mention a free jazz record because of Pharoah Sanders' involvement.

A good friend of mine who's a Sanders fan even called it "Shine on You, You Crazy Diamond" parts 10-14. I didn't think of it that way, but fair enough. It kinda transcends all of those labels and feels deeply meditative and healing to me as well, so that's also part of why I'm fascinated with it. Fuck, maybe you're on to something with that ALS comparison, but I just try not to do that given its status as one of the most important jazz albums in history.

And BTW, while we're on the jazz tip and talking about ALS, if you need a vinyl copy, the new Acoustic Sounds series pressing is outstanding; best you'll ever hear it unless you have an original since the masters were destroyed in the early '70s. It's from a 1:1 UK safety copy. If you can find the Target version, it's the same press/plate. It sounds like they're playing in your listening room.

I've definitely become less of a basic bitch when it comes to jazz in the past few years as I've gotten more into it, but I still feel like I have a lot of work to do to be able to talk about it like I can with rock music. I wrote a blurb about Promises for Under the Radar that attempts to do that, FWIW.

I’m certainly not comparing it to ALS in importance, but I find it similarly meditative, and it hits me in a very similar way. I’ve been enjoying more jazz lately, but it’s mostly been limited to the big names, the Coltranes (John and Alice), some Miles Davis, some Ornette Coleman. I’m still trying to figure out what I really like beyond Coltrane. I feel like loving Coltrane is like the jazz equivalent of loving the Beatles.

I have two copies of ALS, a ‘70s ABC pressing and a more recent reissue (Erick Labson master). Both are decent, but yeah, I’ve been eyeing that Acoustic Sounds reissue.

It kinda is (same for Miles or Duke or Louis Armstrong), but my real sweet spots aren't just bop or modal or cool jazz (though I like all 3), rather the jazz-funk type stuff of the early '70s along with spiritual/free jazz. Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson cover both areas really well, for example, and both were hugely inspired by Coltrane. It's all part of the same continuum.

Oh and I've been LOVING Alice's record in recent years, too, particularly A Monastic Trio, Ptah the El Douad, and Eternity (my favorite of hers). The newly reissued early '80s private press album with her on synth and vocals is really good, too.

I had an early '70s ABC pressing of ALS that I got at a street sale a long time ago, but it wasn't in the best shape, so I traded it to my local once I got the new Target version and now I have that one and the new press (latter thanks to Impulse/Universal; bought the Target one). If you like ALS as much as you clearly do, you owe it to yourself to hear the Acoustic Sounds press.

For Miles, you can't go wrong with any of it from the '40s to the '70s, but my favorite stuff is the '70s fusion era, particularly On the Corner. I haven't dived into Ornette's stuff that much, but I really dig The Shape of Jazz to Come, This is Our Music, etc.

And despite all the jazz talk, I'm listening to the Rebel Truth 7" right now.
