Southern Death Cult vs Death Cult vs The Cult

Southern Death Cult vs Death Cult vs The Cult

Which is your fave? Before a few months ago, I had only really heard Love and Electric. In recent months, I have broadened my Cult horizons a bit with the SDC and DC discography CDs, as well as Dreamtime and Sonic Temple. Although I have loved Electric since it came out, I am really leaning hard in the direction of SDC, DC, or at least early regular Cult.

Why must everything be about death and cults on this board?

Anyhow.

The Cult. Sonic Temple for sure.

This one:

It's plural, and I've heard that more is better.

Not really feeling those vocals. Would be better with Ian Astbury.

Meant to check out DC/SDC for a long time. Only heard a couple of songs here and there. That stuff is on my wantlist.

For the regular Cult stuff, I definitely think Dreamtime and Love are their best work. For Electric, I prefer the "Peace" version of the album. Both versions have their strong points though. Anything after that would be a hard listen for me these days.

Maybe. Imagine how good it would be with two Ian Astburys. Perhaps twice as good. And yeah, I prefer Pilot to Gunner. Glad that their new album is incoming.

I had the old CD with the black and white cover. (really wish I'd held on to it; sigh) It's really good stuff. Love is my favorite of their albums, but I think everything they did in the '80s is pure gold. Check out Sonic Temple if you never have.

I know that a lot of people love Sonic Temple, but it feels a bit like a repeat of Electric to me, but not quite as good. I feel like it would be pretty rare that I would reach for it instead of one of the versions of Electric.

I think that both of the discography CDs are pretty solid. Unsurprisingly, they sound a lot like early Cult, but with a bit more of an early ‘80s post-punk vibe.

I'm pretty sure it was the first one I heard unless I got Love just before, but anyway I've always had a soft spot for it partly for that reason and seeing the video for "Fire Woman" what seemed like multiple times daily for months back in 1989. I've always viewed it as a cross between Love and Electric, but its production is totally different; Electric is grittier, rawer, and very explicitly AC/DC-influenced and ST is bigger-sounding and more expansive if that makes sense.

Fire Woman was a classic rock/hard rock radio staple as well. Probably the very first song I heard by the band. I had no idea they started out with a much different sound until years later.

100% this; heard it first in '89 but didn't get Love and Sonic Temple until '90 so it wasn't that long, but same idea since I didn't hear the really early SDC stuff until the 2000s.

My sister had Love on cassette, so that’s where I first heard them. I bought Electric when it came out. I definitely heard “Fire Woman” a lot BITD, probably on MTV. I was so familiar with it that I didn’t realize that it wasn’t on Electric until I listened to Sonic Temple recently.

Some of the WORST lyrics ever in Peace Dog from Electric

Oh, peace is a dirty word
She used to be a painted bird, yeah
And war, she's a whore
Don't you know we love her more and more?

Smithers, please have Ian Astbury killed!

Dream Time to Love to Electric to Sonic Temple...great run of albums

Later stuff has tracks but nothing touches those four.
