Good covers

I just re-re-realized that the White Flag/Necros split 12" is absolute kick ass.

A lot of REALLY good covers:

Side A: White Flag
1. Geiger Counter
2. Loaded
3. I'm Down
Side 1: Necros
1. Walking the Dog
2. Pipeline
3. Crash

By all rights I should despise this, but I don't... kinda sounds like the Cure doing an ALL song:

I think I might prefer that version. He slowed it down just enough to emphasize how hooky the changes are. Wow.

Really good. Of course they are starting with just about the best song in the entire catalog. I like how he handled that weird break that no one ever gets.

UPDATE: His cover of 'Mary' isn't nearly as interesting.

I had that record and remember liking the White Flag side, especially the Beatles cover.

I think Jawbox did the almost impossible of covering a song and keeping it's core intact, but also making it sound like Jawbox (many Jawbox "fans" consider it a rare Jawbox B side). I love Robbins vocals, but the unsteadiness/sincerity of the original can't be beat... (minus the fucking Frenchy frog talking)

I guess I just don’t get Modest Mouse. They’re goofy. Mark Kozelek took their goofiness and made it sublime. A true feat of alchemy.

I've said it before: I have a huge weakness for well done covers. It probably comes from the gateway drug that was 99 Red Balloons by 7 Seconds. Made this whole punk thing approachable while it butchered, yet paid homage to pop.

Some covers in rotation:

Sometimes it takes a teenybopper punk to cover a teenybopper songs:

On that note, I loved the Doughboys had a good, weird cover each tour. Tiffany's "I think we're alone now" (yes, it's TJ' & Shondells, but they were bbqing Tiff) was the best.

Surprisingly I love the song "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley, but neither Afghan Whigs or the Ataris do it well. Sigh.

No one should cover that song. The original is way too perfect and sentimental.

Couldn't agree more; it was silly of The Ataris to change the lyric from "Deadhead sticker" to "Black Flag sticker" as well.

As for Jawbox, I like their cover of "Sound on Sound" OK (I agree with whoever said the original is incredible and can't be beat; I think it was flex), but this cover is the definitive version of the song in question. Just stunning, admittedly sorta similar in arrangement to the original but just great nonetheless.

I still love Bauhaus’ “Ziggy Stardust” It sounds like escaped lunatics playing ina Bowie cover band. Awesome.

Melvins- Candy-O Short and fun
Dag Nasty- Staring at The Rude Boys
Dag Nasty- 12XU Yep. Love it.
Jimi Hendrix- All Along The Watchtower

The Cramps- They did a bunch of great covers but their “Blues Fix” ep is amazing.

Some I love that haven't been mentioned:

Melvins "Goin' Blind" (KISS)
Redd Kross "Deuce" (KISS)
Dinosaur Jr "Just Like Heaven" (The Cure)
Descendents "Wendy" (Beach Boys)

Can't decide if this is a good cover of a good song, a bad cover of a bad song, a good cover of a bad song, or a bad cover of a good song, so Imma post it in both threads.

"Lillian" - yeah - probably the worst of all Born Against songs which I'm sure wasn't meant to be taken seriously. But given how damn good that comp is, a poor venue to air such a weak/joke track.

But that comp is filled with great stuff, yes - that Greyhouse song is amazing! It was also the first time I had heard Avail's "Sidewalk" (I believe this comp preceded 'Dixie'), Merel, Native Nod, Iconoclast...ah man....great memories with that album.

It did and yes, I thought to mention that great Avail song, too. I bought Dixie in fall 1994 when it was new. I also bought G-d's Chosen People when it was new in the summer of 1993 (so again, you're correct). Native Nod ruled on there (and in general), too. I forgot about that track. I should pull out that comp.

Agreed on BA, but my guess is by that point they didn't care of did it deliberately knowing the reaction they'd get.

Gonna agree there.

Although every time I play a sloppy cheat version of it on guitar, I can't help but noticing it's similar chord / sus thing as "The Godfather" by Dag Nasty, and it gets me thinking of recording a punked up version of it. But then I revert to "it can't be done better just because you add some distortion." :D

I've noticed this before too... always wondered if that was where Brian copped the riff ... it's actually a Mike Campbell riff that was originally intended for Tom Petty &The Heartbreakers, but never used in that band.
