Going Rate for Used CDs

I have quite a few (hundreds) of CDs that Discogs lists their median price at less than $5. I may end up listing things that are $5 for sale, but right now I have been focused on things that had a median of $10+ to list for sale. What is the going rate at a record/CD store that they pay to buy CDs from you?

Most stores won't even take CDs anymore. You're better off selling them yourself. I know when I am looking to by something specific that's a bit more expensive, I will check what the seller has that's cheap and maybe add a few more more of those types of items onto the order.

Depends on the CDs and the store. There’s a place by me that still has a pretty extensive used CD section. I took in a box of CDs not that long ago and walked out with an OG Get It Away and cash. The next time, I only got $60, but it freed up space and was easier than selling them individually.

It really does depend, but I have noticed an ever growing trend of stores near me (and the last major metro I lived in) shrinking their CD sections and not getting more used stock in. That's bad for me because I still like CDs and often buy them. Finding HTF discs in used bins is something I really like doing, but that's getting harder and harder when the CD used bins either get taken down, only have crap I don't want, or the store never gets any new arrivals.

I know of one big online + brick and mortar record shop that will buy CD collections still, but they are very picky about what they will buy. And given that much of the stuff they are selling used on CD is being sold for $3-6 a pop, I can't imagine they will give someone much for each disc, especially if it's not a particularly rare or HTF one.

There are still LOTS of incredible deals to be had on used CDs and they're far cheaper than vinyl is these days, but I've also noticed an uptick in recent months that has sort of paralleled my recent interest in acquiring them again, particularly on rare/collectible stuff. This is mostly on Discogs, though. In stores, they're still dirt cheap and as others have discussed, only a handful will even take them these days.

One store near me set up a glass case for rare/OOP CDs. Everything in there is $15 and goes up from there. That's the exception, not the rule though.

CD Cellar in Falls Church has a lot of CDs and gets in new stuff pretty regularly. Prices are generally maybe $3.99 to $9.99. They also have a bunch of dollar CDs that are generally common 80s/90s stuff. I found Hum and Wire CDs amongst the dollar CDs. Smash! in DC has a decent CD section too. Mostly punk and hardcore. Joint Custody, Som, and Crooked Beat are CDless. CDepot in College Park has a shit ton of CDs. There are also a couple of shops in the area that I’ve never made it to. Maybe this weekend…

Shit keeps selling. I took 8 CDs and 2 LPs to the post office at lunch. Sold 2 more CDs tonight. I've been to the post office every day this week. I have 100+ to list and I have not gone through my ska or UK punk CDs to weed through them yet. Probably taking 150+ to the CD store tomorrow to see what I end up getting from them. That will be the tell tale sign of whether they get any of the other low priced items from the other genres I have not been through yet.
