Bands that have changed radically but kept you interested?

This topic sprang to mind when I was listening to the A.R.Kane singles compilation today. They went from “the black Jesus and Mary Chain” (the British music press has always been so woke…) to deep dub (albeit, still with a bunch of feedback) to straight up dance tracks to more R&Bish stuff, sometimes on the same album. Early on, I really only liked the more feedbacky indie rock stuff, but it all grew on me eventually.

What? They've been playing the same song since their first record.

I kept interest in The Clash as they changed but not near the level of their early material. Same could be said for The Damned.

Outside of changing the singer for an album, what do you think radically changed? To my ears, they are the AC/DC of 90s SoCal punk - every album sounds the same. And, I'm a fan of both of the bands.

I think Priest = Aura is the jump-off point to heavier, murkier, more psychedelic Church whereas everything before is well, a variation on jangle pop. It's especially evident live. They're like Australia's answer to Television or The Soft Boys.

Anyway, the first band that came to mind is Radiohead.

A.K. Kane is an interesting example. Other than the odd track or that 12" of second album album remixes, I really don't like the second album material at all. To me it just sounds very dated and it just doesn't do it for me. And this is coming from someone that likes dance music.

Kinda surprised no one has mentioned Dag yet... from raging Minor Threat-style hardcore to doing Stevie Ray Vaughn-style blues rock and flamenco-ish songs all within about 3 years.

A.R. Kane. Always liked their music but haven't visited in a looong time. Maybe that needs to be rectified.

I used to have 69 on cassette. If I find it, I’ll send it along.

Booooo!
Besides, those songs are outliers, even on FIELD DAY. Dag's overall style didn't change all that much over time.

I would suggest Wire, but again, there's that thread title...

Descendents - tough one for me after Milo. Way too many filler joke/skit songs that are very dated today. At some point I should pick up the rest of their catalog and make my own 2xCDR comp with just the good stuff.

ALL, I just never spent a ton of time with them. I though Breaking Things was a solid album. Heard bits and pieces of the stuff years back but didn't grab me. I did see one of Scott Reynold's later bands years back and they tore shit up live.

My list:

Swans, Talk Talk, Fugazi, Cure (at least up through 92), Blur, loads of jazz musicians...

I have 2 LPs to send you. You WILL NEED to have these:

Gnaw (colored wax with silk screen cover). NY damaging art/noise mega LP.

I have this digitally, but I bought the wax at their show with Siege to support the band:

The other one is a suprise. :o

They got way more proficient as musicians over the years, but they always had that weird spazzy math-rock side to them, even on some of the earliest shit. Now there's a band where I think their whole approach has stayed largely unchanged over 40 years, they've just pushed it about as far as it can go.

I used to feel the same way until I really sat down and listened to Colour of Spring several years back. It's a great album and hints at where they would go. It's My Life is more of a straightforward pop album of the time, but even that is above average for the style. I haven't heard the debut in a long time, so I can't comment on it too much.

I tried with that one, but not in many years. I had it on vinyl, probably the U.S. version. It just never grabbed me. It does definitely hint at where they'd go and I love Rowland S. Howard's version of "Life's What You Make It," though.

You might prefer the live concert film from the Colour era. Dunno if you've seen it but it's worth checking out.

Talk Talk loses me in the vocal department; dude sounds too much like Steve Winwood for my comfort.

Thought of another: The Slits - they went from ragged punk to dubbiness to world music, and I love it all.

Same here; my favorite is the '81 Peel Session, but I love both of the Lps as well. I just played Return of the Giant Slits recently. I don't currently own a copy of Cut and I should really change that.

1) Hüsker Dü as a band
2) Bob Mould did interesting stuff getting into electro and back to rock..

3) Turbonegro from dirty garage to pseudo Van Halen  Always entertaining.
