I'm holding out for the Blu Ray as far as ordering directly from the Filmage folks. Hoping they have a package for that too. I preordered the digital from iTunes instead of from them because that way I'll have it in my cloud on iPhone etc.

Hey Chris, what file format is the download, and do you know when the physical disc is out?

Welly I don't know any of the details on that stuff. I should know more after next weekend….DESCENDENTS/OFF! in Pomona. If you like send a message to the FILMAGE guys, they respond quite quickly.

On Facebook they said it will be about a month after the digital.

Just in case anyone is curious, we won't have a new shirt for the Tempe show, but we'll be unloading a bunch of designs from this year, blowout style!
Best new design will be unveiled at the Pomona show…..you're gonna poop when you see it.
Oh yeah and it's being widely reported now, but DESCENDENTS are demoing new work for an album hopefully next year!!!!

Hey guys, is Filamge a complete career overview story-of-the-Descendents type deal or does it focus mostly on recent years?

Cool, thanks. I think I actually want to see this.

Follow-up: Is there going to be a digital rental option?

Not sure about rental, to be honest. It's definitely a well done doc.

I'm sure it will show up on some streaming service. They are ripe for music docs.
Me, I'm gonna buy the Blu-ray. I care about these guys too much not to want to own the story. And my sister said she couldn't believe how touching the film was. She cried several times during the screening and, just between us, she doesn't cry very easily.

I think it's definitely one of the better docs like that I've seen in recent times (another great one that IS on Netflix is the Big Star one)
I am also going to go for the Blu Ray.

Fun fact: I have unusually dry eyes. When I do cry, no tears are produced. I had to see a specialist when I was younger. They said I just have "extremely efficient tear ducts".

Carry on.

Ready to have your mind blown? I heard them years before I ever heard blink 182 :)

I actually retroactively got into a lot of more mainstream stuff. If anything I got into blink BECAUSE of Descendents.

That would largely depend on whether or not their music started sucking. Even though I found Cool to Be You disappointing it doesn't suck, it really just wasn't up to par with their entire catalog that preceded it. I listened to it again last week and I liked it more than in the past but I doubt I'll ever reach for it when I want to hear the Descendents.

Getting huge wouldn't have necessarily meant that I'd dislike them. Sure it may mean I wouldn't go see them live again (if I wasn't a photographer and I was paying for shows cuz I always disliked huge shows). I never disliked Nirvana when they became huge and I still bought the records. Ditto for Soundgarden and others. It largely has to do with the quality of the records after hugeness.

But yeah, if they got huge and were playing big arenas and I was a paying customer - fuck that nonsense!

Re: ALL/Descendents thread

Postby JGJR » Mon Sep 29, 2014 9:05 am

To echo what others have said, mxv's review REALLY hit the nail on the head. I'm a bit younger, but still related to a lot of what he wrote from digging for and finding punk records as a teenager and having it be like the holy grail to how unpopular it was and the harrassment you'd get before Nirvana, etc. and of course the parts about how Descendents and ALL were two of the bands that got him through high school really resonated as my experience was very similar (and I'm also guilty of not following ALL past a certain point but I am catching up now and also glad that they're getting their due, too).

To me, the one small flaw of the film was that it didn't go into detail about their lyrical controversies over the years, but it's a very minor complaint and like mxv said, it's better to want more out of a film than to want less of it!

One minor quibble with the review: I don't think Smalley came off as resentful at all (hard for me to imagine him resenting anything or anyone from the times I've met him), but just accepting that at the time, he just couldn't (or didn't want to) hack Bill's inhuman schedule/work ethic/touring for longer than he did it. And it's hard to blame him!

I'll say it before and I'll say it again. Sure the '80s stuff will always be the stuff I reach for the most, partly for sentimental reasons, "Anchor Grill" from Cool to Be You is probably the best song I've ever heard about (the atypical of rock and roll) subject of what it's like to be a married adult with kids. Bill should win every lyric writing award known to man for that one.

I'm dumb. It's a DVD/Blu ray combo!

Oh really? You sure? If I order and it doesn't play will you send me a full refund?

dvds will play in any dvd player, no matter how old. do you not have an HD tv though? that is the only drawback of an old dvd player, as it will show stuff in Standard def on an HD tv and is essentially useless.
