SWIZ - all purpose thread

Postby SPACELOVE » Mon Nov 18, 2013 1:13 am

Red Hare played for free at Grand Central in Adams Morgan tonight. They were awesome of course but especially exciting was that they covered Tylenol, Godspeed, Pleas to the Action Figure, and Nine. I had heard that we would get a Swiz cover tonight but I did not expect 3 Swiz songs plus my personal Sweetbelly freakdown favorite. It was not only the perfect end to their set or this weekend in general but it felt unbelievably special for me as a Swiz superfan to finally see those songs played live. I've been obsessed with the band and their various incarnations for years and I can't tell you how fuckimg exciting it was to be in that room tonight.

Anyway I wanted to create a thread where people could share their SWIZ thoughts, stories, memories, love, hatred, demos, and live sets with me and the rest of those people who feel a special connection to this band.

I definitely need someone to upload the demo again as my iPod and laptop are long gone and I got enough room on my new phone to unzip plenty o mediafire links to satisfying my every craving.

Are you speaking of the "With Ramsey" demo. If so www.jadetree.com still has it right on the site for free DL!

Also, Swiz...what a great group. Flawless catalog. I don't have the Sweetbelly stuff anymore (had it years ago) but I need it.

i love swiz and red hare, but between missing the seattle show and this i can't help but feel kind of pissed off they didn't play any swiz songs in pdx. coliseum blow and they should have been headlining playing longer than a 30 minute set.

Yes the With Ramsey demo is what I'm looking for.
The link on Jade Tree no longer works and re-directs to Dave Hause or Kid Dynamite band pages (see below)
http://jadetree.com/mp3/Swiz-With_Ramsey.zip.

The individual links don't work either :(

I'm hoping this little Swiz treat was just a preview of a possible reunion down the line. Or at least more Swiz / Sweetbelly Freakdown covers.

jason told me swiz would never reunite in that name on a stage, so i suspect not. i even asked dave the night of the pdx show if they had practiced any swiz covers, and he said they had practiced one (which turned out to be nine) but it didn't feel right to play it, although they played it the next day. my guess is they are doing it for fun or maybe had a longer set time to fill up.

I've always liked Swiz. I think Shawn's earlier vaguely angry lyrics appealed to me, but (kinda like Samiam) I just really felt "This is guy is singing what he feels". Top that with Jason's guitar work, yeah it's got that aggressive palm muted stuff that Dischord stuff didn't at the time, but he does some really cool single note shit and has lotsa hammer on stuff going on. Anyway, always been a huge fan and felt like people who know DC hardcore but haven't heard of them weren't really paying attention. Back in http://www.geocities.com days I had a Swiz webpage, which I think was the only one at the time. I went to Costa Rica and wore a Swiz shirt in like 85% of the photos (I pack light, what can I say) so I got teased about that on this site and it became a running (unfunny) joke. I also post the same four Swiz photos in threads (another unfunny joke). I hope I can catch Red Hare someday and a hearing a Swiz song would be awesome. I burned some videos to DVD's and sent them to Target but I think they are also posted on YouTube. I have some audio that I'm not sure is online. Pedro was a close friend to the band and I'm sure could write something more meaningful about the band. I'm just a fan, but Swiz meant a lot to teenage me.

There was a WFMU set floating around on the old board. I'll see if I have it when I get a chance. All I could find was this YouTube link, though.

i know of these live sets, but i don't have them on my hd:

early show in 87 before the 7 inch came out, it was 7 or 8 songs, very good audience tape
88 st johns show dc-someone sent me a pm to it on the old board. it was a on a blog and it was a horrible audience tape
wmfu-i think it was like 4 songs, good quality
sunstroke from the significantly live cd comp. shit live track and the cd was considered a boot since most of the bands never got a copy or knew it existed.

there is also a sweetbelly freakdown set from CMJ showcase(i think) that was up on church of zer blog once, but when mediafire deleted his files zer lost the copy of it. i never heard it though.

swiz live is prety damn hard to find, as it looks like ppl didn't bother to document their live shows. there is a fair amount of stuff on youtube though.

supposedly the 3lp set is going to have some unreleased stuff(maybe live shit?), but as far as i knew swiz had nothing left studio wise that had not been released, as the THD ep was supposedly the only stuff left off records.

There is an unreleased track from the "With Dave" session, I remember missing out on a tape on ebay a few years back and there were 5 songs on it. It might be the "thank you list" track that's in the "hell yes" demos download above though, which isn't really a song.

I've got the WFMU set and a few other bits, I will dig them out.

Was lucky enough to see Red Hare in Baltimore earlier this year. No Swiz songs, but absolutely great anyway.

Yeah but just before the "thanks list" track there is a riff being played that cuts off. On the archive dagboard thread where I got the demos link from someone alluded to there being more goof-off songs in the studio and said "hayride" was by far the least worthy of listening to (which I assume is the thanks list track) so maybe Target knows about this?

Target I agree that Swiz is a very good band name but I think Sweetbelly Freakdown is the best name EVER.

No problem - I'm glad I was able to finally track down a digital download because my 7" got warped the day I purchased it so "electric eye" straight up sounded like Farrell was gargling with marbles in his mouth. I didn't realize til the download that it was mainly because of a sound effect on the actual recording.

I just checked popsike and it seems like it typically pops up on eBay about once a year and goes for $25-$35. I'd really like a copy myself, actually, as now the only Swiz vinyl I have is the With Dave 7" thanks to VS. I had Rejects back in the day, but sold it when I got No Punches Pulled. Now I wish I still had the vinyl.

i would say 3 years ago you could get anything of theirs except hell yes(which i think is the smallest amount pressed of their records) for under 25 bucks. now it seems to have risen all of a sudden. maybe because of give, but i can't imagine they have that much of an effect on the price of swiz vinyl. the dude from THD was selling his plates of the rejects 7 inch and i think it went for like 50 bucks a few years back.

I cornered Jason at a Restisonic show and asked him a bunch of Swiz questions about all the releases, I asked what the fuck was up with the "Red" pressing he said they made another batch of records and just inverted the colors of that record (black to red) thinking it will be cool and arty, but were actually unimpressed and thought it was damn ugly. I was asking him pressing information and he was like "Ah, is anybody (besides you of course) really worried about that kinda stuff"?". I would not be denied and asked him about the differences in the inserts of the 7"s though (some of the cartoon/insert look different and are on different paper, but sometimes the same color record has different colored comic book etc). I think he thought I was kidding at first.
