Spacelove - are you in this photo?

Spacelove is the guy in between Yellow Sweatshirt (Crucial John, singer of Give) and the guy w/ the red beard. Spacey and I go way back.

That's what I figured.

That photo always cracks me up because my friend Matt, who I went to high school with, is that bearded dude pointing.

I still don't understand the "hardcore point". What's that all about, and when did it start?

i am guessing ray cappo of youth of today was the inventor of it, or at least made it famous. that would be 85 or 86. prolly got big when the first lp came out and all of those photos of him doing it made the rounds.

This thread....

Funnily enough I was working with an old Walsby cartoon from about '85 yesterday and there were a couple of bald characters in the pit pointing. Wonder if it was a UxCx or Nard thing. I'm sure the Walsb will swing by at some point...

The guy with the red beard is Matt. Matt and I go way back. Same with his twin brother Gabe. We've been good friends since they moved to DC from Chicago back in 1988. Then Gabe moved to San Diego the same time as me and we continued to hang out until I moved back and he stayed in California. Matt still lives in DC.

I'm missing this by one night since I'll be in DC the next night for Soulside. Oh how I wish I could arrive a day early (and to see the Salad Days movie, too).

Does this mean Swiz is playing the next night with Soulside?

I guess I should make it out to this after the movie.

STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES....Does somebody know if Swiz is playing or not? You can PM me if it's double top secret and I pinkie-swear I won't "tell" if it is indeed hush-hush. I'm flying up and while I might have to pay a fee to cancel/adjust my travel plans, I'd do it for sure if I knew Swiz was playing the day before or something. If it's some small house show or something let us old dudes know, I'm so out of step with the D.C. punk world (I can't keep up) I'd be super bummed to hear I was in my hotel room watching The Soup when I could be watching Swiz.

The Soulside "event" page on Facebook now says this about the 12/20 show: "with Moss Icon and very special top secret super guests"

And both Jason and Shawn have changed their Facebook profile pictures to the same Swiz artwork.

If Alex isn't playing drums this weekend isn't it really just Red Hare doing Swiz covers?

"Familiar", 4th song on Joyride.

I managed to get out both Friday and Saturday. I had a great time and it was nice to see some old friends. The only disappointment was the complete fuck up of the shazam level on the Fury cover. If there was only someone there who could have fixed it.....

Is it possible I recognize red beard from when the Gerunds played DC? He looks awfully familiar.

And I've gotta say "mea culpa!" when it comes to SWIZ. I've gone on and on about I couldn't get past Shawn's vocals, but I listened to No Punches Pulled recently and they are a seriously good band. Maybe I had to listen to Red Hare first to then go back and try Swiz again. Maybe I needed some time away from this type of "melodic hardcore" to appreciate it again. But I love Jason's guitar playing, I love the songs and maybe I just 'get' Shawn for the first time. Not everybody is gonna sing like Smalley or Cortner. Sometimes it's not what's called for.

Sal, if it's any consolation I feel like in later years I've come to appreciate Shawn's stuff a lot more. I mean I had the Swiz discog for years (if I were JGJR I'd know the exact date and record shop I bought it at... ), same with the 85-86 CD, but it took the past 5 years or so to really elevate Swiz (and Dag With Shawn for that matter) to a much higher level in my mind.

You know it's funny you say that, because at first I had a poorly recorded dub of it for a year before I bought the actual CD in the summer of 1994. I just can't remember what store I got it at! My experience was a bit different, though, in that when I first Swiz I was blown away and listened to them obsessively.

I always liked Dag with Shawn singing. I bought the first Swiz EP when it came out, but lost track of pretty much all punk shortly thereafter, other than a handful of bands. I now own everything I know of that Shawn sang on, except for a guest spot or two, and I love pretty much all of it.
