Top 10 Records Released by Dischord

Top 10 Records Released by Dischord

Postby version sound » Tue May 04, 2021 4:34 pm

SINCE YOU MILLENNIALS ARE INCAPABLE OF POLICING YOURSELVES:

What are your Top 10 (or 20, if you must) RECORDS released by Dischord. Hint: if it did not come out on vinyl, it does not count. Feel free to pick everything on the Minor Threat discography CD, but those are four different picks, bro.

Have we done this before? I have a feeling my list isn’t going to look a lot like other board members’ list. I only picked full releases and one record per band (except Faith, but Void/Faith is for the Void side).

In no particular order:

Void/Faith - Split
Faith - Subject to Change
Minor Threat - Out of Step
Rites of Spring - S/T
S.O.A. - No Policy
Teen Idles - Minor Disturbance
Scream - This Side Up
Embrace - S/T
One Last Wish - 1986

Yeah, that’s only nine. I probably should have made this a Top 20. These are the definite top 9. The 10th could be a lot of records...

Edit:

Top 10-20
Shudder To Think - Ten-Spot
NOU - Plays Pretty For Baby
Beefeater - Plays For Lovers
Marginal Man - Identity
Ignition - The Orafying Mysticle Of...
Gray Matter - Take It Back
Fugazi - First Demo
Dag Nasty - Dag with Shawn
Red Hare - Nites of Midnight
Youth Brigade - Possible
Lungfish - Necrophones

"Releases" made this easy because of all the CDs. LOOPHOLE TIME

1) Minor Threat "Complete Discography"
2) Fugazi "13 Songs"
3) Scream "Still Screaming / This Side Up"
4) Dag Nasty "Can I Say / Wig Out At Denkos"
5) Faith/Void/Faith CD with the split and "Subject to Change"
6) Rites of Spring "End on End"
7) Shudder To Think "Funeral At The Movies / Ten Spot"
8) Jawbox "Novelty"
9) Embrace "s/t"
10) Soulside "Soon Come Happy"

You said "releases" so I found that loophole, baby!

End on End would have separate episodes for any of mine listed so technically, I'm right. :)

But like you said, it's really just a testament to the label more than anything else. So much gold.

Picking discography releases and two-fers makes a mockery of the process. You know that. It’s not an honest list. Making a podcast is about generating content. Making a list like this is about making choices. Regardless of whether the Minor Threat discography CD is a “release,” in this context, do you really believe that “I’ll take everything ever recorded by Minor Threat” is making a valid choice for this kind of list? Let me answer that, the answer is 100% NO.

So - I'll do this based on my own current journey through the Dischord catalog and doing the podcast. I'm the first to admit that I don't know as much of the Dischord catalog as many of you - but that's part of the fun for me of doing EoE. Our most recent episode is Dischord 28 - the Minor Threat 'Live' video. Honestly? Past that....I'd say I'm only really intimately familiar with Fugazi (up through Killtaker), Jawbox, Slant 6, Nation of Ulysses and Trusty. Maybe a couple of others - not sure. So....my favorites up to the point where I am in the podcast.....and yeah - I won't include releases like the Four Old Songs on a 7", or the Minor Threat 7" collection of anything like that.

So the top 10 out of the first 39 Dischord releases (those include the split releases)...in chronological order:

Dischord 3 - first Minor Threat 7"
Dischord 7 - Flex Your Head comp
Dischord 8 - Void/Faith split
Dischord 10 - Minor Threat - Out of Step
Dischord 15 1/2 - Scream - This Side Up
Dischord 16 - Rites of Spring LP
Dischord 19 - Dag Nasty - Can I Say
Dischord 23 - Beefeater - House Burning Down
Dischord 24 - Embrace LP
Dischord 26 3/4 - Shudder to Think - It Was Arson 7"

Nah dude. You said releases. It's fair. My list is the definitive list, etch it in stone!

I adjusted my list to the clarified rules. Fugazi gets bumped into the 11-15 portion of the list. After that, I don't think I have listened to many other Dischord releases as I missed Revolution Summer.

1. Minor Threat - S/T
2. Scream - Still Screaming
3. Rites of Spring - S/T
4. Dag Nasty - Can I Say
5. Egg Hunt - Me and You
6. Embrace - Embrace
7. Dag Nasty - Wig Out at Denko's
8. Minor Threat - In My Eyes
9. Skewbald 7"
10. Minor Threat - Out of Step

Ok here's a "real" list - off the cuff:

Minor Threat "Out of Step"
Scream "Still Screaming"
Dag Nasty "Wig Out at Denkos"
Dag Nasty "Can I Say"
Jawbox "Novelty"
Faith / Void split
The Faith "Subject to Change"
Fugazi "In on the Killtaker"
Rites of Spring LP
Embrace LP

See guys, was that really so hard? Maybe I’m a nerd*, but I think it’s just as interesting to see which Minor Threat records people like enough to put in their Top 10 as it is to see that someone loves Minor Threat, period (what idiot doesn’t?)

Without too much thought, probably this...

Minor Threat - In My Eyes
Rites of Spring - Rites of Spring
Void - Void/Faith Split (I really mean just the Void side.)
Shudder to Think - Ten Spot
Scream - This Side Up
Minor Threat - Minor Threat
Scream - Still Screaming
Beefeater - House Burning Down
Faith - Subject to Change
Beefeater - Plays for Lovers

Edit after seeing the Captain's post: If we are including the 1/2 Dischord, 1/2 Sammich stuff It Was Arson is in there somewhere. Personally, I have always considered it a Sammich record. This Side Up however has always been a Dischord record, even if it's half Rough Trade.

Surprised to see so few people choose Subject to Change - including me - although it would probably have been #11.

Excellent list. Yeah if the 1/2 releases count I'd possibly swap "Still Screaming" for "This Side Up" but it's so hard to choose as I love both

1. Faith/Void - split Lp
2. Minor Threat - Out of Step 12"
3. Embrace - s/t Lp
4. Rites of Spring - Lp
5. Gray Matter - Take it Back 12"
6. Dag Nasty - Wig Out at Denko's Lp
7. Ignition - "Proven Hollow" 7"
8. Soulside - Hot Bodi-Gram Lp
9. Jawbox - Grippe Lp
10. Shudder to Think - Funeral at the Movies 12"

Something by Fugazi would be 11. This was pretty tough, but easier than I thought it would be to narrow it down. I limited it to one record per band, which definitely made it easier.

Some days it’s my #1.

As for partial releases, I tend to agree with pedro that they are usually more the release of the other label involved. If I was factoring in co-releases, I probably would have put SSD and United Mutation in at least the top 20 and picked Anger Means over Orafying Mysticle.

I'm gonna go 6 Fugazi records (let's say the first 2 EPs, Repeater, SDoN, IotKT, and The Argument) plus the 2 Dags, the first Jawbox and "Of Two Minds" by High Back Chairs.

I always forget that Ignition 7" is a co-release with their own label. I wasn't thinking about that all when I made my list.

It's on my sell list but doesn't look like its worth much. I am not even sure I listened to the CD ever. Probably bought it when I was buying everything a Minor Threat band member participated in or some offshoot of that theme.

That would make sense. I remember seeing Joe play with Craig Wedren at the much-missed Sound Fix in Brooklyn and this was in early 2006, so way before the vinyl revival and whatnot and he had just released his 1st solo joint iirc. It was just him and a percussionist iirc. I now wonder if that was Jerry Busher, who also played with Fugazi, or someone else.
