Stars are one of my picks and the album is Set Yourself on Fire. I found a much higher quality video for the song I posted in another thread. In each of the below cases, I regard the standout albums as some of the best I've ever heard.

Here are some others:

Spoon - Girls Can Tell
The Promise Ring - Very Emergency
Idlewild - 100 Broken Windows (though I love the follow-up The Remote Part, too)
The Apples in Stereo - A Discovery of the World Inside the Moone

I do like EPs by most of these bands, so this is strictly albums (as the thread title states).

Agnostic Front - Victim in Pain
Descendents- Milo Goes to College
Adolescents - S/T (aka Blue Album)
Black Flag - Damaged
Moving Targets - Burning in Water (just never really spent time with the others)
Drop Nineteens - Delaware (they only had two, so this is kind of a cheat)

Wow, no Descendents after Milo Goes to College? That's just hard to fathom.

Seconded on all of these kinda except I do like most of GNR Lies and Open Your Eyes (and the We Stand Alone EP and other EPs), but I don't think Open Your Eyes has held up nearly as well as the 1st Warzone Lp. With SOIA, it's just not having heard most of the last 30 years of their output; love all the early stuff, though.

Gotta disagree on CW, though. Ferment is amazing, too. Chrome is my favorite of theirs, though.

A classic, of ocurse, but my favorite Adolescents album is Brats in Battalions because I heard it first. Ducking.

I almost played that Drop Nineteens album yesterday; keep meaning to check them out for years now and I think all the MBV talk lately has made me curious.

Brats in Battalions has some good songs, but the first album has ALL great songs. One of my favorite SoCal punk records, easy. (GI) and Damaged push it to my third favorite, but that’s some very stiff competition.

Speaking of unpopular opinions, I might like Delaware better than Loveless. Not that Loveless isn’t great, but it drags a bit towards the end, which makes Delaware a more enjoyable listen for me.

Add to my list:

Social Distortion - Mommy’s Little Monster
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (I like some of his other records, so this one is a bit of a stretch, but AW is the only one I flat out love from start to finish.

Fair enough, though in Jawbreaker's case, I do celebrate the whole catalog; hated Dear You when it came out, but I've loved it since the early 2000s when I listened to it again.

I remember you also had The Promise Ring's Very Emergency and Rilo Kiley's More Adventurous as a few of your picks in this category a while back, right? If so, I agree on both.

Not even close; 2nd one was OK, 3rd was no good at all, and I gave up after that, particularly when the drummer left.

Say what now? I saw Endpoint a few times in the '90s, but for whatever reason, didn't have any of the records even though I generally dug them.

I know a bit about that record, too. The vinyl copy on the cover of the 2006 reissue CD is my original copy.

I knew that this would probably make some folks scratch their heads. Truth be told, I like all of them to one degree or another, but have just spent far more time with the last few albums and prefer those (esp. The Rising Tide); not a popular opinion, I know, but I will still maintain that The Rising Tide is one of the most ridiculously underrated records ever.

Some of the other MT stuff is worth checking out for sure. Brave Noise is probably my favorite. I just pulled out my CD of Take This Ride to play later.

I'm with you on the Descendents. I realize this band is a sacred cow for some, but most of their albums are full of dumb, dated humor filler skits and lame joke songs. You have to wade through a lot on those later records to get to the gems IMHO.

I've heard that Dis Plan album talked up over the years, but can't remember if I've ever heard it.

Years back, I think around the time of that album, a group of friends invited me to a Death Cab concert. They were genuinely great live and blew the studio recordings out of the water. Never been much of a fan of their recorded material TBH, but some of it is decent.

No comment on DP as I've never listened to them, but I couldn't disagree more on the last 2. I think DCFC peaked with Transatlanticism and Plans and that the former was a quantum leap from The Photo Album, which has some great tracks, but they weren't really there yet.

Joni - I love that record, though honestly, it took me a LONG time to warm up to it (before that, I only liked the 3-4 songs that are on her Hits album) and only after I finally got a vinyl copy, but I consider her peak to be the period between Court and Spark and Hejira, inclusive of both. C&S is a legit all-time top 10 contender here. I like some of the later stuff, too, like Mingus in particular., but I can't imagine you being a fan of the fusion-y stuff at all.

Pro tip - track down this pressing of Blue if you want your mind blown.

DCFC - try Transatlanticism. If it doesn't hit you, their studio output probably isn't for you

Joni - see my other post in this thread where I responded to scannest, but I also have to agree completely with you here. Her real best album IMO is Court and Spark. It's not even really close, though I love the follow-ups, too, especially The Hissing of Summer Lawns. "Edith and The Kingpin" is my favorite Joni tune.

I've heard that DCFC album many times through friends, but not recently. I just think the studio output paled compared to their live show. Rhythm section in particular way more powerful live. I saw them before they signed to a major so the venue was still not huge at that point. Great show.

Pro tip: It's probably silly to suggest that someone spend $100+ on a specific pressing of a record they've already acknowledged is the ONLY one they really like by a particular artist.

Besides, I listened to a 24/192 hi-res download of BLUE today, via my Dragonfly Cobalt DAC and Shure IEM's. I doubt that $100 pressing is going to sound any better.

Well, as with anything, you can take it or leave it. I know that prices on Discogs for that particular pressing are insane, but I lucked out and found my copy for like 7 bucks or something at a store in West Philly maybe 4-5 years ago, so they are out there. It's probably harder to find now in the wild, though, but anyway I was just trying to help. At the time I bought it, I had no idea it sounded so good, thought it was just a garden variety early '70s press (I'm sure they all sound pretty good, though). I have no idea how much you like it, only that it's the only Joni album you like.

As for the download, good for you. Do you want a medal or something?

Prices on old vinyl copies of Blue have skyrocketed unlike some other Joni albums. My vinyl copy is the version Hoffman & Gray mastered back in the mid-2000s, and it's considered definitive by many people. It used to sell for around $30. Now it's more like $100 for a nice copy if you can find one. Prices on a lot of records are just very skewed now.

However, I would suggest that the inexpensive 2000s CD version is also very good and a much cheaper alternative. Dunno about any hi-rez download for this album. It's very much a case by case basis on those. I typically never buy hi-rez anything unless it has specific content or mastering I cannot get elsewhere for less money.

Besides, I listened to a 24/192 hi-res download of BLUE today, via my Dragonfly Cobalt DAC and Shure IEM's. I doubt that $100 pressing is going to sound any better.

I'd love to hear that Hoffman/Gray version, but I wouldn't shell out big bucks for it. I can't imagine it would sound better, though, so it must really be extraordinary.

I didn't buy it - I downloaded it onto my phone via Qobuz.

If you can find a copy for $30-40, it's well worth getting if you like the album. It's got a thick gatefold cover and comes in a loose plastic bag. Worth grabbing if you see it in a shop or something. Some shop might have it, but it's technically OOP now. It's going to sound very different from an old 70s pressing. Number one, 70s U.S. vinyl was often noisy and mediocre quality. Not all the time, but often. Number two the album has been EQ'd a bit differently to make it shine. Just sayin'.

Well, you're paying for the subscription fees to be able to do that. The last time I tried Qobuz streaming the app was clearly broken and not ready for prime time. It was an utter piece of shit on both Windows and Android. I'm taking a break from streaming now and don't really miss it, so it's not on my list of things to try anytime soon. I have bought stuff from their download store.

I assume you mean this one? https://www.discogs.com/Joni-Mitchell-B ... se/2571066

Have you heard the 2020 version mentioned in the comments? Gray did that one, too. In any case, thanks. I like it quite a bit, but it's not Court and Spark. Not even close.

A common misperception. I haven't heard all of their albums, but 3 (actually their 4th album) from 1988 is a GREAT album and very overlooked. Give it a chance.
