Disintegration.

Perfect album.

I cried in my beer to "Last Dance"

I'm so glad you came
I'm so glad you remembered
To see how we're ending our last dance together
Expectant too punctual but
Prettier than ever
I really believed that this time it's forever
But older than me now more constant more real
And the fur and the mouth and the innocence
Turned to hair and contentment that hangs in
Amazement

A woman now standing where once
There was only a girl

Three Imaginary Boys

Here is a playlist I created a little over a year ago with my 44 favorite songs by them.

Over the years I've realized they are indeed one of my favorite bands. I don't own any vinyl. I need to change that.

"Disintegration" is my favorite. A desert island disc.

Head on The Door is their best album.

"Push" is their best song.

Randie will confirm.

I prefer "Boys Don't Cry", "Grinding Halt", and "Jumping Someone Else's Train" as my favorite tracks. My introduction to The Cure was via the Staring at the Sea double cassette followed up quickly by Three Imaginary Boys / Boys Don't Cry depending on which version you listened to.

One of my dearest old friends saw them at the Tower Theater in 1997 with his cousin when they did that short small club/theater tour (they played Irving Plaza, too) when Galore came out. He yelled out "Push" at the top of his lungs and right afterwards, they went right into it!

My favorites (in chronological order):
Three Imaginary Boys
Seventeen Seconds
Faith
The Walk mini-Lp
The Head on the Door

I love everything they did up to and including Wish, though. That one and even more so Kiss Me and Disintegration were big albums for me in high school, as were The Head on the Door, Boys Don't Cry (a comp but a great one), Standing on the Beach (ditto), etc.

I say this often, but Disintegration is one of a handful of records that really got me into this kind of music back in 1990. I owe a lot to them. It's a deeply, deeply emotional record for me, though, tough to listen to more than every once in a great while.

That must have been amazing... would love to see them in a small club. i only saw them once in 1986 for the Figures on a Beach tour at a big outdoor arena. My best friend owns Reverend guitars, and Reeves Gabrels is one of their top artist/endorsers... a few years back, he got to go to London to hang out with them and watch all three of their shows shows from front row and backstage at Wembley arena.

Same here; the only time I ever saw them was in 2000 on the Bloodflowers tour in a large amphitheater. That is really cool re: Reeves, Wembley, etc.

Three Imaginary Boys

It’s not hard to see why this is lewdd’s favorite; it’s definitely the punkiest Cure record. An interesting amalgamation of punky, post-punky, and even poppy songs. An interesting beginning for a band who would veer from deep goth to pure pop, often on the same record.

I've always considered it to be their punk record or the closest they ever got to it for sure, but there are plenty of hints of where they'd go just a short time later on such as the title track and "Another Day" especially, I think. Long story short, I think Michael Dempsey (OG bassist) wanted them to continue in that Buzzcocks, early XTC type direction, but Robert worshipped the Banshees and wanted to steer them in that way and of course, that is exactly what happened and he later ended up joining them, collaborating with Steve in The Glove, etc.

Anyway, fair review, but I'd give this one a higher score myself.

Seventeen Seconds

Quite a shift from TIB. Pretty much straight post-punk this time around. Kind of one dimensional for a Cure record, but that dimension is a good one.

It's a masterpiece that set the stage for the rest of their career to follow. I didn't fully get that one when I was 17 except for "A Forest" and "Play for Today" (the songs that are the poppiest and most like the earlier singles and 1st Lp), but over the years, it's become one of my favorites. RS said that he was listening to 3 records when they made it: Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left, Astral Weeks, and Bowie's Low. The influence of Low is very apparent.

I'm a fan though I don't listen to them all the time like I used to. I like everything up to and including Wish. After that it's a tougher listen for me. I also have a tough time watching latter day videos and such, because RS looks terrible IMHO.

Anyway, lots to explore in their classic period.

You're not kidding. It's about twice as much as I thought it would be and WAY more than what I paid for my copy about 4-5 years ago. This is the version I've got.

Faith

This one was a bit of a revelation. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything beyond the tracks that appeared on Staring at the Sea. I really, really like this one. Whether they will cop to it or not, there is a heavy Closer vibe here that is executed in a distinctly Cure-y style.

One of their best and aside from parts of Pornography (heck, all of it), definitely their bleakest. This one goes very deep. Agree on the Closer vibe, probably another reason I like it so much tbh.

Pornography

This record marks the beginning of the Cure sound that I knew in the ‘80s. This record is overwhelmingly bleak (some found it comically so) without the pop diversions found on most (though by no means all) other Cure records. It’s quite excellent if you enjoy their dark side.

I think of myself as a fairly big Cure fan. That said, Pornography is my least favorite of their catalog. I was surprised to see that it was your favorite. The darkness and sort of pre-industrial sound is still a huge turnoff to me.

I do love Seventeen Seconds, but my favorite Cure is HOTD>Wish. SOTB Singles, Kiss Me and Disintegration are constantly on my turntable.

For years, I'd say it was one of my least favorites of their amazing 1978-1992 run for the exact same reasons and less hooks than on other records, but now I'd probably place it somewhere in the middle. It's grown on me a lot, but it's one I'd have to be in the mood for. With that said, I've noticed that it's now a lot of folks' de rigeur answer for favorite/best Cure album.

I’d only heard it once or twice before a few weeks ago. It came up at the top of a thread about darkest records ever on the Steve Hoffman forum. I was in a Cure mood at the time, so I gave it a listen, and it really clicked this time around. I’ve listened to it 3 or 4 times in the last few weeks. My historical favorites were definitely KMKMKM and Disintegration. Pornography has the dark vibe that I dig on some of those records’ best tracks without the silly poppy (or funky) songs that I don’t like as much, so it went straight to the top of my list. I do like a lot of their poppier songs, but I could live without stuff like “Why Can’t I Be Like You” and “Hot, Hot, Hot.”

Same. I mean I like those songs and they have their place and the latter occasionally gets stuck in my head, but they're hardly my go-tos or what The Cure is best at IMO and they have way better pop songs. If we're talking KMKMKM, I'd rather hear "Catch" or "The Perfect Girl" or "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" or a host of other songs on that sprawling double Lp. Or that noisy psychedelic guitar solo on "The Kiss." I don't even mind "Just Like Heaven" despite its ubiquitousness since it's such a great song.

Always liked The Cure. An early concert for me, Freshman year of High School. Very important because I learned how to get to Pier 41 which would become a big spot for Indie-rock bands in '86.

Disintegration- prob their best
Mixed Up- the one I listen to the most nowadays
Faith- always had a soft spot for this one, I had the cassette with "Carnage Visors" which I thankfully have again due to the deluxe edition

Staring At The Sea- maybe the best pure singles collection....and yes I'm including Singles going Steady in that......

I'm with VS on this one. That collection is great and so was the double cassette version.

If you were only going to buy one Cure release, this is a good pick, regardless of format/title.

No. They were kids in the process of developing their sound. Some good stuff, but not essential.

That's a hot take; I don't know if I've ever even heard it in full tbh.

I can't tell if you're serious or just trolling someone here. I agree with everyone else. Staring at the Sea/Standing on the Beach is 100% essential in any form, but especially with the B-sides on the cassette.

I never had the SOAB tape. I tend to prefer the albums because that's how I listened to them over the years. I never heard those b-sides until fairly recently when I got the Join The Dots box.

At any rate, I'd say the band was fully formed after the first album.

TIB does sound a bit formative in places, but if you listen to the U.S. BDC compilation that swaps out album tracks for some singles, everything sounds fully formed.

Certainly the band knew exactly what they were doing by 17 Seconds, though whether you like their pre-1986 material is a matter of personal taste.

My favorite subject!

1. Seventeen Seconds
2.Boys Don’t Cry (US release, basically like the 1st Clash UK v US)
3.Head On The Door
4.Faith
5.Disintegration
6.Wish
7,Bloodflowers
8.Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
9.Pornography

1-9 is pretty much set in stone for me, now the rest

Japanese Whispers
Dream
Wild Mood Swings
The Top
s/t

Disintegration
Seventeen Seconds
Wish

Also, they might be one of those bands whose B-sides are just as good as the album tracks. There's some 90s-era B-sides that I really love like "Adonais."

The Top

The album begins with a similar dark vibe to Pornography, but the quirky and even flat-out poppy Cure soon emerges from the darkness. This one is much more in line with the formula for later LPs - some darkness and depression balanced by bright moments. Yeah, that good old bipolar Cure formula. Is this the hardest Cure record? The opener and Give It Me have bits that almost sound like punk or metal.

The problem with this thread is that I’m starting to realize that I like this band a lot more than I thought I did, which means I want to buy a whole bunch of Cure records. Maybe I’ll limit myself to CDs...

This one was always under my radar for some reason. When I owned every Cure album on CD this was the only one I never owned.
