SSD Reissues Coming in 2022/2023

Apparently The Kids Will Have Their Say and Get It Away will be reissued by XClaim some time in the next couple of years. I’m not sure why it’s so far in the future, but I’m stoked about it nonetheless. Hopefully they will be exact repros, other than the matrix numbers, like the Fix reissues.

Bummed to have to wait so long, but I'll take it.

Wouldn't be surprised if many pressing plants are backed up for another year at least.

Also the Apollo/Transco fire impacted things.

If they are self-releasing these through X-Claim that's a lot of cash up front to get the records made.

Glad to see reissues are planned, so at least the money will go where it needs to go, rather than a bunch of bootleggers.

I know Al was shopping labels to do reissues a few years ago and seemingly wasn’t happy with any of them, so it seemed somewhat inevitable that if these were going to come out at all, Al was going to need to do it himself, which I think is the right way to do it. I mean, I would still buy these with a B9 or Taang logo on them, but I’d rather see them back on XClaim. It’ll be interesting to see if Kids is XClaim/Dischord this time around, or just straight XClaim.

Couldn't agree more. I may be nitpicky in this instance, but I'd rather legit wait a year or two and have it say Xclaim on the back

Cool, but announcing a release three years in advance is a little much. I guess it could be worse: PREORDER NOW!

Yeah, that will be interesting.

Terms of deals vary by label and band. Fact is, most of these relatively small labels aren't going to be able to offer a huge amount of $$$ in advance before a single item is sold. Then you've got to trust them to provide an accurate account of what was actually sold, pay royalties on time, etc.

DIY takes all that out of the equation but requires a big financial investment on the part of the artist or a good crowdfunding campaign. Even that can go sideways - look what happened with the Pledge Music fiasco.

I don't envy anyone trying to put out physical releases right now.

Me: Yeah, thanks for still pressing records in 2020. Not sure who is crazier, you for doing it, or me for buying them.

The average person doing a vinyl release is probably an uphill battle, but I bet if Al did exact reissues, and maybe made them colored vinyl to differentiate them from originals, I bet he could easily sell 1000 of each on pre-order within a week (if not a day). I mean if Bitter Lake can sell 900 copies of a record by an obscure Crow offshoot, 1,000 copies each of two hardcore classics that have been out of print for 36+ years seems like a sure shot.

Depends on how many he presses. I’m guessing that if Al is doing this on his own, it’s going to be a one time thing, and he will sell as many as he makes. There is certainly the potential to sell more than BNLA, since there were already more copies of that out there than of either SSD record (IIRC, they pressed 1000 copies of Kids and maybe 2,000 and of GIA). I’m pretty sure BNLA was pressed more than once, and there were several thousand made. It’s a $50 record vs $100+ for GIA and $500+ for Kids.

Oh, I would agree he could probably move them quickly, especially with half or so on colored vinyl, because the FOMO variant collectors eat that shit up. Preorder would probably fund the cost of manufacturing, but you're looking at a long lead time right now. Delaying for 2 years doesn't surprise me at all.

I think SSD will always sell more shirts than records. Not saying it's right but it just seems that way. At least they didn't get back together like DYS. That was a hot mess and I even like the 2nd DYS album in a non-ironic way. Those pictures on the back though.....

While I didn’t vibe with any of the songs they recorded when they got back together, I saw DYS in Baltimore (with Kevin and earthdog), and they were pretty great.

SSD hasn’t really had any records you could buy since the ‘80s, except the awful Power (great content assembled in a bafflingly bad sequence), so that remains to be seen. Will “The Kids” buy these reissues? Probably not, for the most part, but those of us who are old enough or rich enough to have actually owned originals probably will. I doubt he’s going to press a ton of them, but he’ll sell however many he makes.

Yeah, I'm sure live it would have been more enjoyable and I was late to hear them as it was, so maybe I just didn't have much of an attachment. I just of think of Moving Targets or something who came back, put out Wires (ok) and Humfucker (much better) but still isn't close to Burning In Water. Guess that isn't a fair comparison as they were around much along in the first place. I dunno, anyway I just always think DYS as like the same band as SSD just due to how many similar things they had gone on in their career trajectory.

You made me dig out How We Rock and as soon as I finish listening to Hidden Message by Faction, I'm going throw the LP on!

How We Rock has a few too many guitar solos, but otherwise, it’s a pretty good record (Break It Up is a whole other story). If you actually like the second DYS LP, HWR shouldn’t be too metal for you. Even though both bands “went metal,” it was much more tolerable with SSD (IMO) because the vocals didn’t change much. That was one advantage to the fact that Springa couldn’t really sing. It’s the vocals on the second DYS record that really kill it for me. Hell, it’s Dave’s ability to actually sing that makes me prefer early Dag with Shawn over Dave. I know I’m the only person on the planet who feels this way, but CIS with Brotherhood Dave would have been a fucking amazing hardcore record.

So, it looks like it’s going to be a hundo for a bundle with exact repros of the 2 XClaim records and assorted other bits and bobs TBD. I’ll bite if I catch it before they sell out. These records are not going to go down in value, and I could sell my OG GIA to cover most, if not all, of the cost (if these are really 100% accurate repros)...

“This set will also include a hardcover SSD photo book, special guitar picks, collector cards, 2020 SSD Vinyl Releases. This set will be based on the first two releases but might include a special “ How much Art single. This set will include many items TBD. SSD “Get it Away” Virus Mask, custom die cut stickers, etc. This will be the ultimate collectors bundle. This will also include a special 2024 backstage pass that can be used to get exclusive access to the band’s 2024 celebration tour.”

I initially balked at the price, but the photo book sounds cool, and Kids now goes for $$$ (most recent Popsike listing was $950 in August). If these are exact repros, and they don’t make too many (I would be surprised if they did more than 1000), the Kids will be a $100 record by itself in no time. I’ve seen frigging bootlegs sell for $75.

Maybe the $50 is just the two records and not all the extra stuff. That would be pretty rad. Though, if they're not coming out at the same time that could prove tricky.

Now back to $100-200, with a limited run of 41 on black and gold vinyl and only 400 total. Save your money kids. I’m in for $100 for both on black, plus the book and other stuff (or even if that’s just both records).

Most recent sale of TKWHTS on Popsike was in 2020 for $950, so $50 seems pretty reasonable

Yup. I hope I don’t find out about it after it’s long gone. I mean, I’d be bummed, but let’s be honest, these are fetish objects more than anything else. It is very rare that I actually play a hardcore record on the stereo.
