No For An Answer / Carry Nation / 411

Doing Where It Went has me taking some deep dives into stuff I wasn't super familiar with. One of these things is the music of Dan O'Mahoney. I knew the Rev 7" which I like just fine but this past summer I checked out the LP and it smokes! Managed to snag a copy on eBay for a decent price.

But then there's that Carry Nation 7" which also is killer.

And last but not least, 411. I have no idea how this wasn't on my radar back in the 90's because this band is so damn good! I can't stop listening to all of the above and figured there are some fans here.

So what's up?

I think East Coast people tended to ignore West Coast stuff at that point in time.

NFAA was great, that LP rages (I like it better than the 7"). Carry Nation 7" is great as well. I thought 411 was decent. I've seen NFAA, 411 and Both Hands Broken (who I don't think recorded anything,) and maybe one more Dan O band in there. NFAA was amazing live, the others were OK. His current band is called Shiners Club.

i'm a big fan of dan o's bands. especially the nfaa album and 411. he teamed up with some cool people in bands that i wish would have lasted longer:
voicebox - chuck treece
speak - joe foster
both hands broken - sarah kirsch (?)

shiner's club is a little more rock and roll-y than his other stuff, but his last band, done dying, was really good.

More likely his lyrics and vocals. He took K Murphy's songs and made them God Forgot songs. As in: He didn't ask. And man, the final product sucked.

Carry Nation 7" is a favourite of mine, wish they'd done an lp.

I remember hearing instrumental versions of the Voicebox songs on a skate video, don't remember which one though.

The CD version has an extra song. I think the live photos on the 7" are from the 411 show at ABC NoRio I think thats the one time I saw them.

I missed the HAWKER RECORDS show at CBGB so I never saw NFAA

Never could get into them. Sorry fans, but the vocals always had that weird forced deep intonation thing that I hated. Heard some crappy live material once and he sounded more natural at times on that...

Stabb (the band) stayed with the bass player from NFAA when we played Long Beach. He was a nice, smart guy.

I saw Shiners Club open for Dag (with Shawn) in Long Beach. Good stuff. I also saw 411 open for OG Down by Law lineup (i.e. Dave and the Chems) at an invite-only show at a clubhouse in a gated community in Orange County. Very weird.

Sterling.

That rules. He played in Inside Out for a bit too. His chapter in the All Ages Straight Edge book is so funny. He talks about being obsessed with AC/DC.

When we stayed with him, he was way into Joe Cocker. And he had this awesome sandwich/panini-making contraption called a ”Snackster.”

I love the music on the 411 lp.

The vocals were total poo poo, though.

It was like Morrissey and Chewbacca had a baby.
