What’s your dream job?

Lately, I’ve been thinking it would be fun to be a waiter at a small, open air restaurant on a remote beach in Mexico or the Caribbean. You know, the kind where you choose one of three or four types of fish and it comes to your table with the head still attached? It seems a little less stressful than my other dream job: barista. Whatcha got?

About 20 years ago, I witnessed my dream job at that time.

I was at Taang Records Store on Pismo Court in San Diego. The storefront opened up to the "boardwalk" and the beach on the other side of it. The guy working in the store was drinking a beer, had a grill going on the sidewalk, had punk rock blasting in the store, and had 3 young ladies in thong bikinis standing on the beach facing the water.

At that point in my life, it didn't get any better than that.

Now, my dream job is being retired.

Split the difference — work in the record store two days a week.

I like working in Healthcare I.T. just fine. I'm happy where I am.

But my dream would be not having to work anymore.

After much consideration, I think I'd like to own/manage an Arts Center in a small college town. Show movies, put on concerts and readings. Maybe have a little cafe attached with a book/music store. Someplace the same 30-40 people would visit a couple times a week to check out what ever was going on that night. Get the occasional traveler who drove 100 miles for a rare screening or to see a band. Put on a 3-night Power Pop fest that gets folks from all over the country to visit. Spend my days getting into dopey arguments about the best Clash record or why some people can't stand b&w movies.
If you can arrange this, please get in touch.

It is a cool store and he is a great guy. What he has done for that community is incredible. It would be a ghost town now if he hadn't moved their and did what he has done. And, he has helped to keep the blues alive which may be more important than what he has done for my wife's hometown.

Generally not a bummer, and while the pay is very low compared to other lawyer jobs, it pays more than many other professions.

My dream job is kinda similar to scannest's, but I want it to be a bit more low-key. I honestly don't want the headache of booking bands (done it) or trying to screen films, etc. but I would LOVE to have a little used record shop that also serves coffee on the side. I probably wouldn't do it here in NYC given the rents and other factors, though, but only in a smaller place. A college town, some arty town in the Hudson Valley (for example) or much smaller city like Philly, Pittsburgh, etc. would be ideal.

I have my dream job. I sell liquor to liquor stores. We have lots of fun, get a good amount of vacation and get lots of perks.
I've been working full-time since I'm a teenager so I never had dreams of not working or becoming mega-rich or shit like that. I make a decent living, get to do the stuff I enjoy and don't mind getting up in the morning.

I'm an insurance underwriter. First time I did it was back in 2007. It was the worst 2.5 years of my life. Sleepless nights, knots in my stomach all the time, the whole magilla. I was eventually laid off, spent 3 years out of work, and changed cities to finally work again.
Now, when my (new) job was being eliminated 2 years ago I was given the chance to pivot back into underwriting. I dreaded it, but it seemed like a better option than no job so I took it. And now...I really like it. No knots, sleep like a baby. Turns out it wasn't the job I hated, it was the environment I worked in - my co-workers, the company, hell, the product I was selling, who I was selling it to, etc, etc. All that is different this time out and it turns out I actually like doing this. So I consider myself really lucky.

I worked as an actuarial trainee for a few years from 2006 to 2008 and then as a data analyst in both academia and the corporate sector from 2008 to 2011 and had a VERY similar experience in all of those instances. I don't think it was the work that I disliked the more I thought about it, but many of the other factors that you mentioned. I had some REALLY awful bosses, co-workers, etc and I really disliked the environment, structure, some of the people, etc. but not the work itself. In a few cases, the jobs started out great and then changed to nightmare scenarios almost overnight. For example, in one case, it was at a start-up advertising/marketing company when a new CEO came in.

I'm trying to do the same thing now after about a decade in the library/archives field (which is wonderful and generally full of great people, but which is full of project/temp work and which didn't really enable me to use my math/statistics skills/background) and hope to transition back into actuarial work (my real dream job due to work/life balance and other factors) eventually. My last job before I got laid off back in late March due to the pandemic was as a data analyst (basically an Excel wrangler) for a large gym chain and I liked it a ton more than any of the actuarial/data analyst jobs I had in Philly. I think it's also that my attitude towards that sort of stuff has changed a lot, too.

When I went to Marbella on the Costa del Sol in 2000, we stayed in a beautiful house in the hills. There was a couple that lived on the property and “managed” it. I think they did 2 things in the week I was there. I always thought that would be an amazing gig.

1. Audio engineer. Like in charge of remixing/remastering/improving sound. I have a good ear for that shit.

2. Record store owner/bum, of course.

3. Owner of a coffee shop with a stage/PA/sitting area/reading nook/etc. Limited Cajun grub menu/plate lunch served at lunch time.

4. Veterinarian.

The location sounds good, but... waiter? I'd aim higher. Like being the jetski rental guy, or towel cabana staff at that same theoretical resort. :D

Restaurant work can be a nerve-wracking gig... gotta remember all those orders, juggle running around food, time-pressure, etc.

But I just got back from a really nice resort in Mexico (Waldorf Pedregal) where they had just that sort of cliffside fish restaurant (El Farallon) that was amazeballs (not to mention their breakfast place had "the best brioche french toast in the world" as my significant other deemed it.) and I'd be down to work in such an environment for a while, I s'pose.

But seriously, "dream job"... If you own your own business, and you love what you do, that was the definition for me up until I sold my company and semi-retired. I still miss the work of it though.

Ah yes, the "Thomas Magnum" gig. Tough to find, but great work if you can find a billionaire who needs house-sitting. Preferably with a stable of sportscars and an un-inventoried wine cellar.

Spain: Agreed. Beautiful place.
