I'm about to buy a few more Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers albums on Blue Note. I like their sound.

They recorded a lot of great albums. Don't overlook the non-Blue Note albums from the early years either. Those are really good too.

You really can't go wrong with anything Jazz Messengers related from the 50s and 60s. Just watch out for crappy public domain/bootleg pressings on both vinyl and CD. Unfortunately both jazz and blues have been plagued with this stuff really badly over the past several years.

I think it looks great. That's an day of some wild Jazz. If you like the stuff here you'll prolly go down the next rabbit hole of later-era Coltrane & Albert Ayler, who I love.

I've been finding that I certainly like the up tempo songs the most. I'm also finding that unlike my early punk rock days I don't think I have found any jazz record that I have bought from front to back. I still need to listen to all of those listed earlier. Certainly may be the only thing in my personal life that I can thank this pandemic for boredom early on giving me inspiration to watch the Miles documentary and then start listening and buying jazz records.

Didn't you get Miles' "Kind Of Blue" Pretty much ground zero for Jazz. And the best place to start is with the players on that album. Between Miles' and Art Blakey's bands almost everyone of note in bebop passed through their groups. Then came Ornette & the free-jazz cats but thats later.....

I did, but did not look at who played on that Miles album other than Coltrane. Chambers played on many other albums that I bought recently too that I didn't know until last night. His Bass on Top album is being delivered here tomorrow.

Bass on Top is a very good album. I don't have the latest LP reissue, but I do have it on CD. I've been keeping an eye out for more by him but a lot of his catalog is OOP and only available via sketchy bootleg/gray market pressings (both crap CD and crap LP) that I refuse to spend a dime on. Old vinyl for some of those albums can be very expensive also.

At any rate, try to find a copy of "Bohemia After Dark" if you can. Totally different from Chambers' solo albums but really good. It's often packaged as a Cannonball Adderley or Kenny Clarke album.

I have not spent much time looking at who plays on each of the records that I have bought and I have not got to listen to all of them yet either. Outside of Blakey and Roach, I don't know the names of any others yet. I'm up to about 55 jazz albums now.

I don't know if I am ready to explore any other genres yet. What would you recommend if I were to start?

I listened to quite a bit of 2Tone and 3rd wave ska in the late 90's and early 00's and Bob Marley's Legend compilation. I not gone back further than that. That may be something worth exploring. Where would you recommend I start?

I have about reached that point. That may be my new years resolution. I probably need to finish watching the Burns documentary too so I can learn a little bit more about the genre and the history.

I'm listening to it now; mind-blowing. It's gotten some negative reviews from those bemoaning the sound quality (it's an audience recording off 2 mics, essentially, and amazing that it exists) or who don't like the later Coltrane stuff, but for me, the rougher/more free, the better.

Half way through the night, I blurted out 'SALT PEANUTS', which caught their attention. However, the singer/drummer/spokesperson then went into a diatribe about how it was his second least favorite song to play. But I was too damn busy trying not to puke to hear what reason he gave. Then they played it. The end.

One thing to remember about Parker is a lot of his stuff wasn't that well recorded and was originally released on 78rpm. If you can keep that in mind, here's a set I can recommend:

If you are open to CDs there are other things I might recommend. A lot of people like the Dial era for Parker.
