I will say that the next 4-5 episodes all have guests who played on the records. Some have multiple!

Seriously, even by 1985, there were records that I didn’t even bother to put on my want list because they were too hard to get (first Fix and Necros, a lot of Misfits stuff). Those guys were lucky to be in the right place at the right time. All those LES punks were too poor to even think about collecting.

While that's all true, I think you missed the greater point. It was a lot easier to find now super rare stuff with persistence, patience, etc. back then (even into the '90s; heck more so since so many were getting rid of their records then) and the prices were obviously much better (even adjusted for inflation, etc.). They lived on the LES/EV and later Williamsburg when it was far different than it is now btw.

I know I've said it before but Javier's wild opinions are the reason I chose him as a co-host on here because to me, I feel like it adds an interesting element. Jason is going to be coming on more often (he's our behind the scenes guy) and his opinions are much more in line with mine.

No sir.

1) Collecting punk/hardcore WAS a thing dating back to the early 80s, at least.
2) Nope, it’s 1000% easier to find rare records now, if you have the money. You may have paid less BITD, but your chances of finding these things were much less, unless you happened to live in a major city, preferably within the geographic region in which the record was released (both true for NYC and the Bad Brains single and Misfits records).
3) I lived in Williamsburg very briefly in the mid-90s and had friends living in NYC dating back to the early ‘90s. I am very aware of how different it was in the ‘80s/early ‘90s.

I was a guy collecting rare punk/hardcore in the mid ‘80s. I know what it las like.

Glad to hear that Greg is having success with the blog. Hopefully, you get some sponsors soon so that you can make some money on top of having fun. I'm jealous. This is something I would like to do when I retire. By that time, people probably won't care.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying and obviously you were there in the mid '80s, but I highlighted the money thing. You simply didn't need it back in the '90s to get rare/collectible stuff and that is generally not true today, but of course you're correct in saying that it was much harder to find due to the lack of internet. I was fortunate enough to live in central NJ when I started collecting and the proximity to both the college I'd end up going to and NYC was likely a major factor in being able to get stuff. I also think that Discogs has changed record collecting in a ton of ways, both good and bad, but one of those factors is that stuff isn't priced randomly anymore and so there is less cheap of something rare slipping through the cracks.

You have to acknowledge that the reason these things go for more money today is that many of the the people who give a shit about this music are now adults with actual jobs that afford them the disposable income to blow on said records. In other words, these records were cheaper BITD because no one who wanted them could afford to pay more.
I dunno, maybe this is an obvious point but I don't see anyone making it.

Same reason why a $20 MSRP box of baseball, football, or basketball cards right now can be bought for $20 at Walmart and sold on eBay for over $100 as soon as you get home.

Yup. Same thing has happened with the vintage guitar market, and I’ve been priced out of both.

That's a great point and one I should've acknowledged/addressed as well. Sometimes a point isn't obvious until someone makes it. With that said, the other piece is that music scenes from the past (and particularly hardcore/punk but not limited to it by any means) are now much more heavily fetishized than they used to be mainly (but not exclusively) due to the internets.

I always thought of Corporate Deathburger as more of an anti-capitalist song, but Chicken Squawk was definitely a vegetarian anthem.

Hold on, since when is early MDC not straightforward hardcore? I mean Chicken Squawk was a slight detour musically, but they were most definitely a hardcore band.

100%. That was the first one I ever remember hearing that dealt specifically with vegetarianism, but then again Smoke Signals is one of the very first punk records I ever bought. I was already a vegetarian at that point, so I thought it was cool.

Again, 100%. Millions of Dead Cops is one of the best records ever made and sadly still very relevant today lyrically. I know some thought of it was just generic thrash when it came out (nothing wrong with that, but it is very much not, their later records even less so). It was the fastest and most political thing ever in '82 at least in American HC from what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong, VS and others).

To be fair, though, even on the 1st Lp they quoted Bowie and by the 2nd Lp there were rock riffs galore, 3rd Lp they covered Cream, etc. You get the idea.

I never made it past the first album and first 2 EPs, but yeah, that stuff is classic hardcore (except for the country spin they put on Chicken Squawk). For some reason, I never bought any of their other records. I think I was put off by the cover of Smoke Signals. It looked like some kind of hippie rock to me as a 14 year old kid.

And yes, absolutely still relevant (unfortunately). I can probably relate to this even more in the Trump era than I did in the ‘80s:

That first MDC albums got lots of spins on my turntable as a teenager. Still one of my favorite hardcore albums ever. As VS said, I don't listen to much after the first album and few EPs either, but there is probably a good solid albums worth of songs I like after those. They used to make our house shake with the Kenwood 15" woofers I had as speakers at that time.

version sound wrote:I never made it past the first album and first 2 EPs, but yeah, that stuff is classic hardcore (except for the country spin they put on Chicken Squawk).

Smoke Signals is definitely worth hearing if you like the "Chicken Squawk" 7" since there's another version of it on there. The rest of it isn't country-tinged, though, but just slightly more rock-influenced hardcore punk. They cover "The Big Picture" (by the Canadian Subhumans) on there, there's an anti-apartheid song that also addresses racial disparities in the U.S., another tribute to vegetarianism called "Tofutti" (a kinda cover of "Tutti Frutti" with the lyrics changed), etc. You get the picture. I love it.

And I agree that their lyrics (and that of other contemporaries/friends of theirs like the DKs) are perhaps even more relevant now. I know that aside from political hip-hop (Killer Mike, PE, et al.), I reach for MDC, Dicks, etc. a lot in the last 6 years since the BLM movement came to prominence.

You guys outdo yourselves every week. I learned a lot about Bold/Wishing Well/Rev/other stuff listening to this and it also made me appreciate Speak Out more than I ever have. I don't think I'd listened to it since the mid '90s. It's also so weird that they reuse the same catalog #s for later archival releases/reissues (same thing for Bold).

I hope you saved Alex for the Statue episode (one which I'm personally looking forward to perhaps more than anything else coming up except for Burn and Underdog). Either way, can't wait!
