Somethin To Du - Husker / Replacements podcast

My quibble with Let it Be is with "Unsatisfied". Like "Hold My Life", it's a great chorus in search of a verse. "Sixteen Blue" is the great lost ballad - one his most underrated songs. Beautiful lyric, music and vocal performance.

Just bought a 2009 Rhino 180gm reissue of Candy Apple Grey on discogs. With that and Warehouse, I am all set for my Husker Du vinyl needs. I wouldn't listen to many songs on the others so no need for vinyl. I can stream my playlist through the stereo if I have the desire to listen to those songs from other releases.

Episode 4 recorded today. I think people are going to enjoy it. There's been some changes to the above, the next interview will be episode 10. Episode 7 will be something else :)

I never thought about it that way before, but I do see what you’re saying. Still think it’s a great song, though. It’s amazing how much a song like “I Will Dare” takes me straight back to the ‘80s, even though I didn’t really listen to The Replacements in the ‘80s.

I’ve gotta say that this podcast has quickly become a favorite, and I definitely look forward to new episodes. You guys are doing a great job. I really enjoy End On End too, but my feelings/opinions about Dischord stuff runs deep, so it’s not quite as relaxing...

Another solid episode! EFA is probably my sentimental favorite, as it was the first HD record I bought. It might also be my favorite objectively. They really nailed the intersection of melody and fury on that one.

A few good songs on it. I don't think they are truely worth a listen until they hit Warner Brothers.

Yeah, that is a little strong as I do enjoy over a dozen pre-Warner Brothers songs. Flip Your Wig was probably my favorite pre Warner Brothers release.

Thank you! It's a rad record...while not necessarily my favorite I can totally see how it would be someone's favorite. I think it was the first real glimpse into their true sound, apart from "In A Free Land".

The interview with Jaygun went really well, can't wait for folks to hear it!

I’m a big fan of Warehouse, but I think that Candy Apple Grey might be their weakest record. It’s still a solid record, but I’ll take pretty much any release before or after over that one, except maybe Land Speed Record, which I should probably give another chance.

"Land Speed Record" is the one I reach for the least. As far as studio LP's, CAG might be my least favorite? But it's still awesome.

It was the first Husker record I was anxiously waiting for and I've never gotten over my initial reaction, which was that it was a supreme bummer of a record.
I appreciate that these guys were never lighthearted, but man...CAG is so dour and miserable. I remember I bought the "...if You are Lonely" 12" first, and listening to all 8+ minutes of "All Work and No Play". It seemed to perfectly describe where Grant and Bob's heads were at at the time. And "Hardly Getting Over It" only works because Bob so fully commits to his depressive nature. If he half-assed it the song would play like a parody of the Smiths, but he full-asses it, that's for sure.
So while I don't dislike it, it's not an album I think about returning to much. I listened again recently thanks to the podcast and was surprised how well I remembered it. "No Promise Have I Made" is a beautiful ballad.

FYW is my favorite HD release with CAG a close 2nd, followed by NDR. I know most dig Zen Arcade, but it ranks pretty low for me.

Listened to FUEL today and liked it much more than the last (first) time I listened to it. I could hear the shoegazer influence more this time around. I’d definitely buy it at the dollar store.

I immediately loved COPPER BLUE, but was turned off by (what I heard as) the deliberate abrasiveness of BEASTER. So when FU:EL came out I was kinda checked out on Sugar. It's a better record than I remember.

Honestly, Beaster took a while to click for me. "Tilted" is one of my favorite Sugar songs, if not my #1.

Tilted is the only song I like off of Beaster. There are about 4 songs on FU:EL that I like. I probably like all of Copper Blue, but have 6-8 songs I put on a playlist. If you take my favorite Sugar songs, you have a very good 46 minutes album worth of music. If Bob put those songs on one piece of vinyl, I would pick it up in a heartbeat.

Another extremely entertaining episode. Funny how you guys were talking about comping and looping guitar tracks. If I ever get around to recording anything again, that’s undoubtedly what I’ll do. I’m too lazy and have too short an attention span to play the same thing over and over, and what are the odds that I would ever be playing full songs in front of anyone? I guess this is what happens when you don’t learn guitar by learning other people’s songs and you just sit on a couch playing by yourself for 30+ years. You just end up being a lazy, unfocused asshole.

I comp tracks all the time, but usually it works this way - I'll play a song all the way through 3 or 4 times and pick the best overall take. But if there's an obvious flub or one part I nail better on a different take I'll pull it in and use it.
My dismay with PTMM is the idea that Westerberg couldn't get a single good take so Dickinson would take the best couple bars from a verse and loop it, then repeat for the chorus, etc. Especially on such primitive digital equipment.
