Shitty news for sure, but honestly, I was more bummed when Sterling died.

RIP Lou.

I'd already forgotten it. I heard a few hours ago and I choose to remember his best work, all the VU stuff and some solo albums I really like as well. RIP.

shit sucks. there was something on tv about how he was doing transformer with string instruments live, i think it was from 2006. they are also running that dumb commercial now for xbox one with the guys singing perfect day, prolly not the way he wanted to go out being remembered.

Yeah, but some of it is quite dated now lyrically (though I liked it a lot at the time I first heard it and still dig it). My favorite solo albums of his are Berlin and especially The Blue Mask.

I like Street Hassle. All of them have good material, though. I've never heard the Metallica record, which could be the exception that proves the rule, but generally, the man didn't make any shitty records.

Tis a sad loss. My favorite is also THE BLUE MASK, JGJR. 8-)

I listened to side A of Sally Can't Dance earlier. Based upon that record (and others), I can't say that's the case, but his inconsistency (and relentless experimentation) was kind of part of his charm. The Blue Mask, which I listened to last night, and Transformer, which I listened to earlier, are both amazing and hold up very well, though.

I saw that A Night with Lou Reed video when I was 14 or 15. It's on my short list of life-changing r'n'r moments. As a result the albums from around that time are the ones I treasure the most (The Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts, Live in Italy), but it's impossible to single out any particular phase or time. Only got to see him live once when he played a series of dates at a Broadway theater when New York came out. It was pretty magical.
Easily one of the best songwriters ever.

The shame of that album was probably what killed him.

ouch! i haven't read the obit - but i'm guessing it was the hep C that killed him. a few really good friends have succumbed to that. anyway, i love the velvets - and it's sad to see him go. his solo career was a bit hit-or-miss...but transformer is quite a tasty platter. and he had the odd song here and there through the decades that are i-pod worthy.

Those are good songs. The presentation is somewhat lacking, but it's far from shitty.

It's sad when anyone (with a few exceptions) dies, but Lou wasn't really a personality who was easy to identify with. He was probably my favorite songwriter of all time, but I never really identified with with on a personal level.
