It's the same riff as Life Goes On by the Damned.

The Sex Pistols freely admit to ripping off In the City for Holidays in the Sun.

i know nirvana owned up to it. kurt didn't want to use it for the single since he thought it sounded like KJ too much.

Beat me to it re: "Life Goes On."

Re: "In the City" and "Holidays in the Sun," I have always thought it was the opposite as The Jam never really fit into the '77 punk thing and were trying (not very well) to hide their mod leanings then. I guess I was wrong, though!

Sometimes, I think that McLaren was a visionary in certain ways (especially after reading Rip It Up and Start Again), but the above confirms that he could also be really blind. I mean they'd already written and released "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the UK" and basically ignited the entire UK punk explosion (one reason I hate it when people say they were a manufactured band, etc.).

The title track from Green Day's "Warning" is a wholesale rip-off of "Picture Book" by the Kinks. The Green Day catalog is full of stuff like that.

Especially on "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown".

I feel like they acknowledged the Kinks similarity on "Warning" but not sure.

American Idiot has songs that ripoff Dillinger 4 and Jawbreaker that I can think of off the top of my head.

Too lazy to look it up, but Social Distortion released a song a few years ago that totally copped the riff from "Get The Time" by the Descendents.

It was the bonus track on their "greatest hits" album! I remember it came on the radio and I was really thrown off.

The Elastica song in question is "Connection." I think it also borrows the keyboard line from The Stranglers' "No More Heroes," but I might be confusing it with another one of their songs.

Also:
Stiff Little Fingers - "Strummerville" (their tribute to Joe Strummer after his death) has the same exact riff as Joe Jackson's "One More Time" (not a Clash song, interestingly enough, despite its title)

Beat me to it. I like Elastica, too, but in no way, shape or form do I think they were better than Swervedriver, Catherine Wheel, Radiohead, Lush, Spiritualized or Blur and that's just off the top of my head.

It's not one of their better-known songs (i.e it's not on Singles Going Steady), so I can see that. Anyway, "No Reply" is on their first album Another Music in a Different Kitchen.

Wax Idols "The Scent of Love" borrows the riff from The Chameleons' "Less than Human." The opening is almost identical and I find myself singing the opening line of the Chameleons tune whenever the Wax Idols tune comes on.

A lot of people don't realize that the Subhumans first released Fuck You first in 1979, although the same guy sang on the DOA version too. The first version of that song was originally recorded by pre-Subhumans band The Stiffs a year before.

Man, love the s/t Elastica but the follow-up wasn't very good. Danny, Justine offered to give you oral pleasure @ a gig :?: :o Was this back in her druggie days or was she straight when she gave you (what I'd say) "was an offer you can't refuse". Or did you turn her down being a married man :?: She is one sexy lady to me. Everyone here who has a hard-on for Lydia Lunch ... Justine is incredibly hot/Lydia is not. Wow, what a nice story.

I'm surprised nobody got this one. Monkee's "Last train to Clarksville" is The Undertones "One way Love".

And the vocal chorus melody of Pavement's "Trigger Cut" has Jim Croce's "Operator". There's no doubt in my mind that Malcmus is a Croce-fan. The things I pick up on in songs-ha!

Re: Monkees/Undertones, I've never noticed that but wow you are correct as I am humming the riff of both songs now. I've also had "Top Twenty" stuck in my head all day and while I'm not sure if the riff is the same, it references T Rex's "Solid Gold Easy Action" lyrically at the end.

Also, a funny story about "Last Train to Clarksville." I was watching Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve play the (I think) first of their two sold-out shows in one night (I was at both of these) as a duo at the Supper Club in New York back in 1996 and in the middle of "God's Comic," Elvis stops the song during the line "if I should've given the world to the monkeys" with an improvised 10-second snippet of the chorus to "Last Train to Clarksville." Oh well, it's not much of a story, but I thought it was funny at the time.

And how about the fact that two Pavement songs from Slanted and Enchanted are practically the same song(s) as The Fall's "New Face in Hell" and "The Classical." I think one is "Our Singer" but I can't remember the name of the other one. It's cool that Malkmus is a Croce fan (I never noticed the similarity).

"Shelter" by The Alarm has the same opening riff as AC/DC's "Hell's Bells"

JGJR, I have a large portion of the Costello/Naive pairing from a live Radio broadcast @ The Troubador that I love but would've killed to see that gig (+ the one you speak of) :!:

Clash77, you're right about the "head on" story so Danny ... what was the scenario, brother :?:

Those gigs were astonishing. It was the first time I'd ever seen the Costello/Nieve duo (I'd see them many more times between then and 2004 or so, which I think was the last time they played as a duo) so there was the sense of not knowing what to expect. He pulled out a lot of obscure album cuts and rarely played stuff, too, from what I remember. I also remember how funny he was between songs, too.

Anyway, I think the show at the Troubadour was part of the 5 disc EP box set that I have as it was part of the same mini-tour. I think Pete Thomas joined them on drums for part of their set, too (maybe for "Man Out of Time") if memory serves. I used to have a tape of the SF show (forgot the venue*) from that tour.

*I looked it up and it was at the Fillmore.
