I was JUST about to post a new thread to declare my love for Wire. Well played, 'G Warrior'.

On a related note...

There are 2 songs that come to mind that are both really good except that they go on for waaaaaaaaaay toooooooooo loooooooong. I'm talking about Wilco's "Less Than You Think" and Lou Reed & Metallica's "Junior Dad". Both songs would infuriate me every time they came on until one day I realized that I could just...fade them out at an appropriate time to be determined by me. Now I enjoy them both without any of the consternation.

I'm reminded of a friend who told me of going to a sex shop and finding a...uh, "toy" that she really liked except that it was waaaaaaaaaay toooooooooo loooooooong. She asked the shop assistant if the same toy was available in a 'shorter' version. The assistant said "No, but remember - you don't have to 'use' the whole thing." She said it was like a light bulb turned on above her head.

It's the little things, I guess.

Be introduced to the Black Flag catalog through anything past Slip It In is like only knowing Bill Cosby as a rapist.

Band: Seaweed
Album: Weak
Song: Shut Up!

I Always Skip That Song and its a shame, because its a blemish that just has to crap out toward the ending of a wonderfully perfect trip. So close to getting past the finish line.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people were introduced to Wire (whether they knew it or not) via R.E.M.'s cover of that song on Document. I like both versions.

I think I might have been in college by the time I found out that the covers of 12XU (MT) and Ex-Lion Tamer (Soulside/Rollins) were Wire tunes. Kids these days have no idea how hard it was back in the pre-internet age!

Any KISS fans here remember that dumb band, ANGEL? They were like the only other rock band signed to Casablanca Records (I think they may shared management with KISS).
Anyway, I dutifully bought a couple of their records and liked this one song in particular. It would be at least 20 years before I realized it was a cover:

Rubbish. REM cover is ever worse, if that's possible. You can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

I say that often, too. I didn't know that either when I first heard Document because I didn't hear Pink Flag until about 4 years after that (also when I was in college); same deal with that Rollins cover, now that I think about it, too (first heard the cover in high school). I don't think I heard the Soulside cover until I was in grad school since that's when Less Deep Inside Keeps finally got reissued and I heard that many years after the rest of their catalog.

Whoa, that's a bummer. That's the best Soulside! (besides the Lunchmeat 7"). I saw them in Boston right after it came out. LDIK was among the records I hastily sold in the early 90's. I would very much like to own it again.

There was a tribute album where I think everyone did a song from Pink Flag. It was ok. Forgot who did Reuters, but it was ok.

I strongly disagree, but I also didn't get to see them until 2014. I like it, but what came after is much more interesting/exciting to me. Hot Bodi-Gram is a big favorite of mine in particular, but I like Trigger and Bass quite a lot as well.

I didn't know R.E.M. covered "Strange". I listened to it on youtube while I was typing my post in the Shudder to Think thread. That was terrible.

And John, you are on crack. The original is great. Just like every song on Pink Flag. The Wire song I would skip is "I Am the Fly" on Chairs Missing. But usually I don't really care enough to skip it.

You just swapped one pile of crazy for another. I've been listening to a lot if the mid 80's and later stuff by Wire, and the even more recent stuff too which is all criminally under-rated

Last time I saw Wire, as spiteful as they are with their setlists playing nothing that anyone knows (or wants to hear) they actually played 'I Am the Fly'.

I rate that song a 4/10. Its not an album I deem as "Very close to being pure" so it would not qualify for this thread's topic to begin with.

Band: David Johansen
Album: David Johansen
Song: Lonely Tenement

That song annoyed me back in the day, and I like violin. Would have been a perfect album.

Ha!

My first two punk records EVER were Black Flag's "Family Man" & "Slip It In". I don't even know they were punk records at the time - I just happened to see them while scanning the racks looking for Black Sabbath records & I was taken in by the artwork. They were odd and different and I loved them both.

It wasn't until my next trip to the store when I asked the guy, "I need more of THIS stuff" that he pointed me in the direction of the "Punk/Hardcore" section. Found The Blasting Concept comp, and was introduced to the earlier Black Flag stuff. I scratched my head wondering if it was even the same band at first.

Now I could have just jumped on Wikipedia and figured it all out rather quickly....but this was 1986 yo.
