RSD-Black Friday 2016

Here's the list:

http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases

Looks like there are about 10 releases of interest to me. My local store will probably have 5 of them so that should work out OK. I was initially excited about The Ramones and Billy Idol live records, but it looks like they are compilations of various shows, which I am not a fan of.

The only thing of interest to me is the Big Star record. Still not sure it's worth spending $30 for a double LP of demos. Not sure how often I'd actually listen to it.

Demo and live albums for the most part terrible.

Only around 10 live albums I listen to regularly.

Kiss
Ramones
AC/DC
Rush
A bunch of DJs with live mixes that I've played over and over.

and some other shit.

Pro-tip: get the CD version. It's 3 discs and I know you love Big Star as much as I do. It's essential. Only the 1st disc and the last disc is finished/mastered/mixed stuff, a few songs of which I think haven't been officiaaly released before (at least not in that order or they haven't put all on one disc).

I was planning on buying the CD version, but it's on Apple Music, so now I have to decide whether I would listen to the actual CD. 90% of the time I stream these days. When my daughter is older, that might change, but for now, hard copies don't make that much sense.

Whatever format you choose, you should definitely listen to it. I think you'll be quite happy with it as I was.

The CD version came out in October. It's only the vinyl version that's coming out on Friday.

Nothing, but my my eBay saved searches and Discogs searches have been hitting paydirt lately. Almost too much. I've gotten the following recently for under $15 (mostly under $10):

Soul Side - Hot Bodi Gram LP
Beefeater - Need a Job EP
Bratmobile - The Real Janelle EP
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking LP (OG promo)
Iggy/James - Kill City (OG green vinyl)
Fugazi - Steady Diet LP (first press)

In store-Jimi Hendrix-Morning Symphony Ideas 10"
Kinks-Sleepwalker LP
MC5-Kick Out The Jams-(not technically RSD release but couldn't resist red/white/blue vinyl).

On order from Dr. Strange-(may not get all if they run out)
Ramones-Live at the Roxy LP
TSOL-Revenge LP
Joe Strummer Gangsterville 10" (this may have been 2015?)

Is it the uncensored version?

You got an OG Nothing's Shocking promo for under $15? Holy moly. I have one, too (not 100% sure if it's a promo). I've got those Soul Side (did you come around on that one?) and Bratmobile records and used to have the Beefeater. I'd love the Fugazi Lp, but would be OK with the remaster.

I ordered a UK original of Elvis Costello's Trust via Discogs the other day for $11, but it hasn't gotten here yet. I've ordered a bunch of stuff from there earlier this year, too. Discogs is great.

I then went to Spina on Saturday and got the following (all used):
Peter Gabriel - s/t 3rd album (U.S. version)
Gram Parson - GP (original)
Ian Dury and the Blockheads - Do It Yourself (from the dollar bin)

And on Sunday, I went to Repo and picked up:
A few $1.99 Abba records in good shape. I think they're both hits compilations.
Dinosaur Jr - Bug (Jagjaguwar reissue) becuse I got the You're Living All Over Me reissue at their show the night before
Sleater-Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One (Sub Pop reissue) because it's my favorite S-K album

I also got The Fall's The Unutterable (2014 reissue; only vinyl version) 2xLp and Graham Parker's Live at Marble Arch Lp (likely a nice boot) at Vintage Vinyl alongside the RSD stuff.

The JA had a $9.99 BIN, which was a refreshing change from all the sellers who think stock copies are somehow worth $99.

I just finished (finally) reading Dance of Days and did a random Discogs search for HBG, which turned up a copy for $5.50. As much as I prefer their earlier stuff, that was too good to pass up.

The $99 is a dream price, but it routinely goes for $30-$40.

You can get an original with the color sleeve for about $20-$25. I think that's what I have, actually.

And I think Steady Diet of Nothing is really underrated, actually. I've owned it on cassette (bought it when it came out) and CD, but not on vinyl.

There are regular gold stamped promos too. That's what I got.

I've always loved Steady Diet. I also bought it on cassette when it was new. By then, I would have been buying CDs over vinyl, but I saw it on cassette first and didn't have the patience to wait for another format. I'm glad to be finally getting it on vinyl. Now I have everything but the Instrument soundtrack on vinyl (all first pressings, except Repeater and IOTKT, which I found reissues of for cheap).

I think I have a gold-stamped one, too.

I also saw it on cassette first. I didn't even buy my first CD until 1993 and didn't have a player until 1994.

Hey VS-I think I had put that aside but I ended up with Hit and Run and 2 Tender Fury ones. I need to find a US store that has the Change Today reissue.

Apparently the band does not like the sound of STEADY DIET OF NOTHING. They were burnt out and exhausted and thought it was a mistake to self-produce. This is what lead them to working with Albini for the follow-up, which they then famously scrapped and returned to DC and Inner Ear.

I always thought it sounded pretty good.

I wonder if Dischord will ever release the Albini sessions.

There's a terrific 2-part podcast where Steve and Ian discuss the sessions in great detail, along with a number of interesting topics:

I listened to part 1 and the answer to my question is clearly "HELL NO." I downloaded the sessions at one point and I didn't hear what made both Albini and the band think they were a complete failure, but Ian obviously REALLY did not like the results.

On a tangentially related note, I saw Shellac in October and was really impressed. I'm a casual fan at best but they were great live.

I just listened to Shellac for the first time today. Like Albini's other bands, I like the music, but I'm not crazy about the vocals.

Saw Shellac in RI last month. Todd is insane on drums. I got a shirt that you can't even really see that it says Shellac. Classic Albini

Also-Matt I listened to the MC5 vinyl reissue. They don't say "brothers and sisters" at the start of "Kick Out The Jams" if that is what you are worried about. :D
