I'm not sure that's a good thing. I'm afraid he's too good for the job.

He has always been a big proponent of punk/hardcore. It'll probably sound rad.

Jesus, the last time the Misfits had a competent drummer it was 1978 or some shit. Not sure how I feel about this.

by the mean
Lombardo is currently playing in a band called Dead Cross with Justin Pearson from Struggle/The Locust/Retox, so this is not a stretch.

He is still playing/touring with Suicidal (they are doing another fall US run with Megadeth) so I guess he is considered a punk drummer now :D

Robo = can't get into the country (I think)
Chuck Biscuits = has he done anything since '99? (Social Distortion era)

Yes. He faked his own death and quit the music business.

While the 'original' vibe would be quite a bit cooler with Robo, I am not sure why this guy gets the accolades that he does. Besides the fact that he was in two legendary bands, he was a pretty horrible drummer (definitely the worst drummer Black Flag ever had besides the homeless/shoeless guy). Plus I met him once, and he was kind of a dick. Lombardo is a hundred times the drummer he is.

I am guessing he's not a complete dumbass that will play slayer style double bass in a misfits set. It would be even awesomer if he did do that, though.

Yeah?

I don't know, Sam. The guy may not have been the best drummer technically, but his "pulse" gave Black Flag that defining rhythm...a certain swing, if you will....that carried through the entire history of the band starting with Jealous Again.

Bill Stevenson, who is undoubtedly a MUCH better drummer than Robo, subverted a lot of his own style when he joined Black Flag in order to retain that feel.

This isn't unprecedented....Marky Ramone, who is leaps & bounds a better drummer than Tommy Ramone, completely put aside his own natural style to keep Tommy's rhythmic pulse in place, which was also obviously a defining feature of that band.

Pink Floyd went to complete shit when they stopped using Nick Mason in the studio in place of drummers who could run circles around him forever, because technique was substituted for the very distinctive Mason heartbeat that was a part of the defining sound of Floyd up to that point.

I think Bill Stevenson was clearly the best drummer Black Flag ever had....but without Robo's drumming and style, the Black Flag as we know it would have sounded VERY different.

This might have something to do with me thinking damaged is a really over rated album. I like all the other versions of those songs so much better. The first full length is just about my least favorite bf release. Blasphemy, i know.
Lombardo has plenty of punk cred. I'm sure he'll know enough to tone it down to suit the style. It's not like they're getting someone totally unfamiliar with the band or genre. Slayer have always cited old punk bands as influences almost more than metal bands. People have always ragged on the misfits for not knowing how to play. At least well get to finally hear them with one competent member. And of all the 'definitive' members, the drummer for the misfits is the most easily switched out, IMO.

I love the Static Age-era Misfits and don't much care for the Earth A. D. stuff so my fear is that their hiring of Lombardo is an indication that they'll focus more on the latter than the former.

I just saw Lombardo play with SUICIDAL and he was solid. It does fit more of his style. How it works with the MISFITS we'll just have to wait and see, but I'm guessing Glenn calls the shots and will have input on how it should go.

Now I'm curious if they'll make Lombardo appear like a ghoul lol
