It could possibly happen in Baltimore, but yeah, it's less surprising in PDX.

I have a bunch of their records and while I don't play them often, when I do I've always enjoyed them.

Best band. Untouchable catalog.
Need to hear a studio recording of Armageddon.

Man, that is a band that really needs each other. The solo stuff I've heard from the respective members has been pretty meh, at best.

Some of Higgs' solo output is amazing. It's just all over the place as a whole.

Sure, why not? I also saw Lungfish open for Joan Jett during her "I'm the original Riot Grrl" period.

Not as good as the original, but not bad. Does anyone know which song Red Hare was covering? It was familiar, but not a song I could identify immediately off hand.

Cool version, but they definitely smooth out the rough edges on it.
I bet 98% of the audience at that show have not heard of Lungfish before

Maybe. They did do a full US tour together.

I'm imagining these young dudes she's playing with - session musicians, basically - having to sit down with a Lungfish CD on orders from the boss lady. "This isn't nearly as cool as System of a Down", they cried.
That vid also proves that Mitchell Feldstein's weird drumming makes all the difference. And it cannot be replicated.
NB: Joan did good backup vocals on Circus Lupus's "Popman".

i'd rather see jett over lungfish. cool she took them out on tour. not down with riot grrl, but i guess she has the claim to the throne, but cherie is a better artist these days.

That does sound like a very Portland-esque thing (and it's awesome), but that kind of thing happens around here in West Philly as well. We have a long tradition of Halloween cover sets by makeshift bands in basements and what not. We just don't have the hype (or the TV show) that Portland does.

We saw play a set like that about 6 1/2 years ago here at the ICA. He was opening for the band Espers. Anyway, it was odd but cool.

Ordering the upcoming reissue of "Love Is Love" got me thinking about Lungfish. I'd always wanted to take a dive into their vinyl so this jump started me - found some other reissues that are out of print on Discogs sealed for $15 each so that's cool!
They've got a ton of albums, what are people's favorites?

I like ‘em all, but I think they started to really hit their stride around Sound In Time. I know that doesn’t really narrow it down much, but Love Is Love is as good an example of their “mature” sound as any of them, so you’re off to a good start.

Thank you! So early on when I'd buy anything on Dischord I had copies of "Talking Songs For Walking" and "Pass & Stow" on vinyl and thought they were cool but never dove any further. I had been debating trying to grab their proper LP's for quite a while so going to the bandcamp and grabbing "Love is Love" and "Talking Songs.." was a nice start. It's weird how the other reissues are out of print - they must JUST recently be, because I was able to find four of them for $15 each, sealed which I knew I had to grab because it looks like the other albums that are out of print go for a lot.

I liked the first two records back in the day. My friend actually had a tape of what would become Walking Songs that we would listen to a lot as we drove around aimlessly on a weekend night. That was around the time that I pretty much abandoned hardcore/punk, though, so I didn’t go any further into their discography at that point. I went back and delved into their discography maybe 10 years ago and found that everything up to Pass and Stow has a pretty similar sound. Starting with SIT, they moved in a more groove-y hypnotic direction that really clicked with me. There are great songs on those early records, like “Nothing is Easy” and “Creation Story,” but overall, I prefer the later stuff.

I'm taking a deep dive while working this week, I decided. I'm on 'Rainbows from Atoms' now which will take me to the end of my work day and then tomorrow I'll pick up where I left off.

Just play the song "Creation Story" from that album on repeat and the rest of the album you can prolly omit from the deep dive. Thank me later.
Both of you.

“Creation Story” is probably the best song from their early period, and it sounds a heck of a lot like their late period.

Imma go with 'Descender' from the 2nd album as a solid tie for my opinion of their best track.

MY RANKING OF LUNGFISH ALBUMS (plus the best song from each) Love is Love (Unfold the Leg) Rainbows from Atoms (Creation Story) Sound In Time (Signpost) Pass & Stow (The Evidence) Necrophones (The Way) The Unanimous Hour (God's Will) Feral Hymns (Way-Out is the Way Out) Indivisible (You Did Not Exist) Talking Songs for Walking (Descender) Necklace of Heads (Nothing is Easy) Artificial Horizon (Oppress Yourself)
The album rankings tend to change. To be clear, even the bottom of that list is better than most every other band's records.

When I was in college I had the first two Lungfish albums on cassette. For whatever reason, they didn't grab me enough to keep going with them. Sounds like that may have been a mistake. I just re-listened to Talking Songs for Walking and really enjoyed it. Where should I go from here? Stay the course with the catalog in order?
Side note...my buddy Joe worked with Alec MacKaye's wife at Nightline for a bunch of years. He attended their wedding. Lungfish played the cocktail hour, Lol.

If you like those two, yeah, just keep going in order. As I noted before, there was a pretty noticeable change circa Sound in Time, so their sound is a bit of a “before and after.” They got more hypnotic and meditative. If you like the more straightforward punk(ish) stuff, you have about 2 more albums of it left. I almost feel like their first few records were a continuation of Reptile House, and SIT marked the full evolution into Lungfish.

I was listening to those first two albums in the early 90's. I was really into Fugazi at the time. I think my initial interpretation was that they were Fugazi without the grooves. From your comments, I think I may find that I really dig the later work. We'll see!

It's on their bandcamp (the vinyl) which is why I snagged that too on BC Friday. It's weird that the other reissues are out of print. I don't know anything about running a record label but it seems weird to have stuff out of print by one of the bands that has the most material on the label.

They repress them periodically. I guess there is enough of a demand for that, but not enough to keep them all in print. I currently own:
Pass and Stow Indivisible Love is Love Feral Hymns ACR 1999
I just ordered Sound in Time.
Kicking myself for not ordering Unanimous Hour when they repressed it.

I had good luck w/ Discogs and just got a work bonus so figured why not?
I was able to find a place that had sealed copies of: Pass and Stow, ACR 1999, Sound in Time and Rainbows from Atoms.
Then I was on eBay and saw Indivisible (a presumable OG press) and put in the lowest bid thinking I wouldn't get it, since I probably shouldn't spend the money.......every time I do that...I win LOL so yeah.
Looks like the ones left I'll need to eventually grab will be: Necklace of Heads, Artificial Horizon, Unanimous Hour, Necrophones & Feral Hymns - not too bad.

It’ll be easy enough to tell when you get it. The OG has a matte textured cover, the reissue doesn’t.
If it’s the one from March 8, looks like an OG.
