i only have the mp3s, but i can't see so much difference in the 2013 mix compared to the original. the live tracks are kind of lacking too. i woudn't pay 150 bucks or whatever they are pricing it at.

What he said.

I kinda wish I had the physical version if only to see that 5 page letter from Albini. Having said that, I thought the live set was pretty cool, not as good as the one included with Nevermind though.

I totally would've expected him to say Elvis Costello or The Stones.

Oh, Sabbath is in his Top 5. As a bass player I totally hear it. As a songwriter...not so much.
The new record sounds like it was written at home on acoustic guitar. It's an occupational hazard. It's easy to play acoustic guitar at home. The trick is to then go into a smelly rehearsal space with a couple like-minded knuckleheads and rock the fuck out.

On a related note, this new Mike Gent solo track does actually do that. Rock the fuck out, that is.

You learn something new every day re: Pete's love of Geezer Butler's bass playing. I'd have to read up on it again, but my understanding is that the new record was recorded somewhere down the shore right before Sandy hit and kind of on the fly and the songs were already written that way (on acoustic guitar at home). Anyway, neither that album or When You Come Home really "rock the fuck out" at all like a lot of The Figgs' stuff, but I enjoy both of them. They're kind of meant to be singer-songwriter type albums, I think.

i saw the box set last night, but it was sealed. it looks huge, like a vinyl box set. it was 175 bones. there was a 2 cd set that had the 2013 remix and some of the bonus stuff for 28, but i doubt i'll buy it as i am fine with the originals. i never even bought the box set they released with the demo stuff. personally, i could live without live nirvana stuff as they were never that good live.

Seriously? WOW. I have seen them probably a dozen times since the mid '90s (most of the time, it's been opening and/or backing Graham Parker but sometimes on their own, too) and have never seen them do that!

Never good live? Have you listened to the Reading '92 show? Or the Paramount '91 show? And that's just as far as official live releases go. I think they were awesome live from what I've seen. Like a lot of bands, they probably had good nights and bad but when they were on they were on.

I like the Live in Reading disc more than the first two LPs. I don't know about the "majority" of bootleg/non-legit live recordings, but that official live disc is better than a lot of groups' live albums and is certainly a good performance by normal "rock" standards.

i am not saying they never had good performances, but i have heard a lot of shows where cobain was too fucked up or they just sounded off. it was pretty much like the doors, i would say they were either very on or really off. with the amount of drugs cobain was doing, that is perfectly understandable. if you DL banks of the muddy wiskah live cd, that is a pretty good sampling of how good or bad they could be.

Try the Live at Reading disc. It's a complete show, not a hodgepodge of on and off performances. The recording quality is also quite good.

yeah, i have the mp3s, it is good. my friend used to have a lot of live nirvana tapes. one had flea doing a trumpet solo on smells like teen spirit. they were fun, but most of the ones i heard were pretty sloppy.

Interesting. I didn't even realize that record had ANY electric guitar whatsoever. I'll have to go back and listen to it. It's been a while.

it's barely there at the end of the first song, (edit-also on funny time of year). it would have given the album a little more layering though.

Until recently, I hadn't listened to Soundgarden in about 15 years. I'm surprised how well that record holds up. Bought it as an impulse purchase from the $4.99 bin at Best Buy. Also picked up a used copy of Superunknown, which I haven't spun yet...I probably wore out the cassette version as a teenager so it'll be interesting to see how it fares.

Until recently, I hadn't listened to Soundgarden in about 15 years. I'm surprised how well that record holds up. Bought it as an impulse purchase from the $4.99 bin at Best Buy. Also picked up a used copy of Superunknown, which I haven't spun yet...I probably wore out the cassette version as a teenager so it'll be interesting to see how it fares.

i think badmotorfinger is their peak. louder than love and the sst stuff was also good. i like some of the superunknown, but most of it is shitty and watered down pop compared to BMF. i would love to see them on tour as they do the old stuff but tickets were like 80 bucks for nosebleed last time.

Nice playlist. Love Girlfriend, Badmotorfinger (their best, I think) and anything by The Skids.

Unsurprisingly, the first EP has always been my favorite.

Isn't there a rule about limiting people to (1) post of 5 things a day? Unless they're like a professional music critic or something.
And listing individual songs? That's crazy talk. Why don't I just list every live video I've watched on YouTube so far today (hint - there's been a lot of Black Crowes and Neal Casal)?

Maybe YOU'RE just nitpicky.

What Black Crowes stuff did you watch?
