Your loss, but I get that Scott is not for everyone (there's plenty of stuff I don't get or am not quite as enamored of as many others I know). He's definitely not rock and roll, but something else closer to European art-pop. I think he was brilliant, especially those late '60s records but not limited to that, either. His best records make a lot of others seem kind of stupid if you want my honest opinion. I've listened to 3 of the 1st 4 albums this week and am gonna play the rest of his catalog. I only have Scott 3 on vinyl.

How's the Jenny Lewis? I liked The Voyager, but don't ever think she'll make anything as brilliant as Rabbit Fur Coat again. I hope to be wrong in this case, though.

And the first song on Scott 4 is "The Old Man's Back Again," my favorite by him and one I have sort of a personal connection to (long story that involves my dad being in Prague in 1968), so that helps as well.

Hmm, I'll have to see if I agree with you on the Jenny Lewis. More Adventurous and Rabbit Fur Coat are huge career peaks for her IMO and nothing before or since has hit the same level for me.

Speaks volumes; I have a sorta half-baked but I think logical theory that folks like you and Nick who prefer the glam era just like straight-up rock and roll best and those of us who love both that period and the stuff from Station to Station to Scary Monsters are also post-punk fans (which I am and I know you're not). I love the Ronson era, too, but the '75-'80 era is WAY more interesting to me and I play the albums from that era more often with the exception of Hunky Dory and Ziggy, both in my top 5 Bowie Lps but the others are all from that other era. Low is my favorite, especially side 2.

Serious as a heart attack. I used to feel the same way for many years (and I still love side 1, of course) really until about 4-5 years ago, probably. Then side 2 just really hit me and yeah I know that whole era and particularly that ambient side is inspired by not just German stuff like Cluster, but by Eno (who worked on it and was inspired by them and worked with Cluster, too), but there's something about it that really hits me hard. I love all of that stuff, too, though. Side 2 of Before and After Science has a similarly high place in my personal pantheon.
