RIP David Bowie...didn't even know he was battling cancer.

I don't think anyone knew he had cancer. I went to bed early last night and the last record I played before that was the new Bowie album which I just received the day before. I woke up to find the news he died. That was a little eerie. He was definitely one of the most influential and unique musicians that will ever walk this planet and he had such amazing longevity, still putting out good records as recently as two days before his passing.

A friend told me in 2014 that Bowie had cancer. I didn't believe him. Same story with Lemmy.

Anyhow, 2 great rock icons. The last Motorhead album was excellent. Haven't heard the Bowie one yet.

Sad to hear. Not a huge fan, but he definitely has some cool songs. For some reason I really liked "Time Will Crawl" a lot.

The only Bowie thing I ever bought was the first Tin Machine on cassette :!:

Whilst I can't say I was a 'fan' (since I never listened to a full LP of the man), I really liked a lot of his more famous songs (Ashes to Ashes, Fame, Let's dance, ...) since they played a lot of his stuff on the radio channel my dad listens to and could play a couple of his songs on bass.

Regarding the "title track" of this thread: really creepy song. "Ashes to ashes, funk to funky, we know Major Tom's a junky; Strung out in Heaven's High, Hitting an all time low". And the little bass line and the eerie synth.

Like he said himself, an 80's nursery rhyme. Question is, is this the same major Tom? Maybe he drew a parallel with Aldrin? Or is he Major Tom? Or is Major Tom a psychidelic astronaut? I guess no-one knows.

EDIT:This was one of the songs that really creeped me out as a kid. I remember getting that feel from Sinatra's 'That's Life' as well.

Midge and I have discussed how we both discovered Bowie through these remarkably disturbing videos he made in the lte 70s/early 80s. They warped my pre-teen mind but good.

It's the same Major Tom that was introduced in "Space Oddity." He revived the character a series of times, including most famously for "Ashes to Ashes."

I had a conversation with JGJR and another friend on social media that it's crazy trying to find used Bowie on vinyl for a decent price since his passing. I thought it would cool down, but not the case right now. Least I bought "Ziggy" a decade ago for a good $5. Since I got back into vinyl, been meaning to explore the past catalog, but not at these prices and not in the mood to fork down $20 for a re-release. For now, I'll listen to my paid streaming service and wait for a bargain to pop up to add to the collection.
