i don't think holtby can be as great as he was last year - but in my opinion oshie and williams >>> kessel. he can score - but there is a reason he's bouncing around the league. if a pathetic team like toronto doesn't even want to hang on to him, you know there is a problem. he's fat. he doesn't play d. and, as you said, the pens D is thinner than kalista flockhart after the stomach flu.

i think the teams to beat in the east are the rags, bolts and caps. can't wait for the season to start.

I can't wait for the season to start too. I bought season tix to the Flyers minor league team here in Allentown. Going to their preseason game on Saturday. Looking forward to watching the guys that will be on the team in the next year or two. Some of them have looked pretty good during the Flyers preseason.

I got tickets for my GF and I to go see the Lightning's season opener against the stinking Philly Flyers this Thursday. Hopefully Tampa's season will pick up where it left off!

Thoughts on the 3 on 3 ot???..I saw a bit during preseason and still have the same opinion..Not a fan..I would prefer 4 on 4 for 10 or maybe 15 min, then the shootout..

in don't like 3 on 3, 4 on 4, or the shootout.

what's wrong with a tie? (unless you have to wear one at your office)

i think there should be NO points for a tie and no gimmicks at the end of the game. That will force teams to play harder in the 60 minutes provided...and make the end of games more exciting. I'm all for OT in the playoffs though. That's the best.

I think they should follow the EPL (and other soccer leagues) scoring format of 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and zippo for a loss. If they want to have OT (10 minutes at 5-5) I'm fine with that. I'll even go winner in OT gets 2 points and loser gets 1. But I really have no issues with ties. The 4-4 OT is bad and a 3-3 is bound to be worse. The shootout is a joke.

I have low expectations for the Bruins this year. I still can't believe they gave Dougie away. Our D is razor thin. If Chara gets hurt we're screwed. And really, what could happen to a 38 year old physical, defenseman who has played about a billion minutes over the course of his career? He'll be fine.

Eeek.

Yeah, it was a good time. I actually thought Philly played a better game (passing, timing of shots) but, obviously, glad Tampa won. The crowd was really into it and winning the season opener after getting to the finals was a nice way to start off. I think that missed penalty during regulation just took the wind out of Philly's sails. I had pretty good seats (suite level) and I was with my GF and a good time was had. I was fucking shit-dog tired the next day at work, I'm getting old.

As a joke I told the attendant that this was my first hockey game so she got me a fucking badge and certificate. I put on the huge badge and was laughed at by just about everybody that saw it.

I gotta believe that any healthy guys that have been scratched recently for the Flyers will be in the lineup tomorrow. I am pretty sure that they play Neuwirth in goal instead of Mason as he has played in 10+ straight games since Neuwirth had been hurt. Neuwirth needs to get some rust off too before the playoffs in case they need to play him.

Sharks take game 1 from the Kings, but as you guys know, the Sharks blew a 3-0 lead on the Kings so this far from over. I'm not looking for revenge, the Kings are just another team that's standing in the way for the cup. Honestly I can say 25 years of not reaching the finals is too long

Well, the Flyers have lost 6 Stanley Cup Finals since they last won over 40 years ago. I am not sure if that is any better than not reaching the finals in 25 years.

i'm not sure if the flyers are a good enough sparring partner for the caps. i was hoping they would be a bit better so the caps could hone their skills en route to the actually good teams in the east. but i suppose we will have to make do. holtby absolutely owns the nhl right now. for all goalies with 35+ games under their belt in the post season, holtby owns the best GAA and save% in nhl history. And that's with only 2+ years experience! i'm hoping that the flyers can try to win at least one game, so I can catch game 5 at the verizon center on Friday. But at this rate, the series will be over by Wednesday.

It will be a different game tonight in Philly. I am expecting someone taking out a top Caps player like what happened to Couturier. I hope it goes to at least 6 games so I can go see the game next Sunday in Philly.

the caps are better at every position - i used to think that the only way the flyers could hang with the caps is by being more physical - but from what i've seen so far, it is the caps who are dominating the physical play. sure - the flyers are still a much dirtier team - but after the caps scored two power play goals on two shots in the last game, i think they will be a tad bit more careful. if the flyers fall behind early tonight, i think you will see them wither like a eunuch's willy.

Once again, "philly fan" proves they just don't care by throwing those bracelet things on the ice repeatedly. Bolts got man handled last game, but started the playoffs with some pretty big injuries. Boyle doing the chicken dance is getting lots of press down here. I guess I'm old but I didn't even try to see about getting a playoff ticket. I'm just way more comfortable on my couch in my boxers eating mashed potatoes and watching the game(s).

I saw a replay of that, and do not agree with you. It looked like the guy was falling down AND the Flyers player made an attempt to pull back but was too late. I am not condoning the hit, but do not think it was cheap.

I am very disappointed in the Flyers fans from what I have seen too. They were acting like Eagles fans. Historically, the fans of the Flyers have not acted like the goons that show up at Eagles game. It was very disheartening especially it being the first home game since the death of Ed Snider.

It has certainly been a frustrating series so far. I am glad we made the playoffs though. It has given some of these young guys some experience that will only help them down the road.

Hats off to the Caps! They look like they are the real deal and Ovie may get his chance to lift the Cup.

the hit is exactly what the nhl is trying to eliminate. if you look at the frame-by-frame of it, he had plenty of opportunity to alter his course, slow down, or target a different area. instead, he never slowed and actually lowered his body position to make full impact on orlov, who was in a low position. i'm not saying he is a dirty player (gudas and white are) - but he needs to be suspended because it was extremely reckless. that could have killed him. i don't know if it helped him - but orlov also played rugby and has a very thick neck. that could have possibly saved him from a catastrophic injury.

I think the NHL needs to work on consistency of their calls. They are becoming as inconsistent as NFL tackling rules.

If the refs are not consistent in their calls and the league is not consistent in their suspensions, I think it is challenging to expect the players to change how they play.

Again, I am not saying what transpired was right in any fashion. I am just saying I think it is hard for the players to change how they play without their being clarity and consistency. Make it so that if you hit a player at any time in the back it is a 5 minute penalty, and add a game misconduct depending on the severity of the hit. Suspensions should also be a certain minimum amount of games and up to the amount of time that the player you hit can not play. If the player is concussed and can't play for 20 games, the guy that hit him should sit 20 games. Again, I am making things up as examples, but the league needs to do something extreme to change player behavior.

well - now it's down to the caps and pens. i hate these series more than anything, because it brings back painful memories of the ghosts of caps' playoff failures. that said, xxxhunterxxx owes me dinner at ben's chili bowl as a result of a friendly flyers/caps wager. that might be all i get out of this post season. if the caps advance past the pens, i will be pleased...but very surprised.

The Caps are a very well rounded team with a very, very good goalie. If they can stay focused and out of the penalty box, I like their chances of going to the NHL finals.

I am glad the young guys on the Flyers team had a chance to taste the playoffs this season, and get a few wins against a great team. It should only make use better next season even with what will probably be a starting goalie dispute.

That being said, I have to route for the Blackhawks tonight in hopes that they advance. They are the only team left that I have ties to.

From today's Boston Globe:

"The NHL banned Philadelphia Flyers forward Brayden Schenn for three games for a high hit on Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie during a charging incident in the second period of Philadelphia's Game 6 loss Sunday. Schenn will miss the first three games of the 2016-2017 season."
