I agree with this.

Hunter, Oh, I saw the other portion of the TP review but just wanted to place the biting portion of it up cos it's funnier. And makes more sense to me. I think the reviewer somehow got a big sniff of the old Mondays LP before he begun writing on the latter stuff. The kind of contact high even a good writer could get off of that shit could warp a persons brain.

One more thing: After listening to Oasis "Mourning Glory" & Franz Ferdinand's 1st, I just cannot listen to either one. Something really pissed me off. Sure there's some melodies & interesting influences. But the lyrics are ASS CRAP :!: If a band can't come up with either meaningful, clever, tells a good story or just nice wordsmith, I just can't tolerate it. Shit-songs? No. Shitty pointless gibberish just to try to make the song flow?! No more of those bands for me. Now Pulp are still on my top list because there lyrics are both clever & damned good storytelling. 8-)

I don't know enough Oasis lyrics to defend them but, with respect to Franz Ferdinand, you're on crack, Stubbs:

"The Dark Of The Matinée"

You take your white finger
Slide the nail under the top and bottom buttons of my blazer
Relax the fraying wool, slacken ties
And I'm not to look at you in the shoe, but the eyes, find the eyes

Find me and follow me through corridors, refectories and files
You must follow, leave this academic factory
You will find me in the matinee
The dark of the matinee
It's better in the matinee
The dark of the matinee is mine
Yes it's mine

I time every journey to bump into you, accidentally
I charm you and tell you of the boys I hate
All the girls I hate
All the words I hate
All the clothes I hate
How I'll never be anything I hate
You smile, mention something that you like
How you'd have a happy life if you did the things you like

Find me and follow me through corridors, refectories and files
You must follow, leave this academic factory
You will find me in the matinee
The dark of the matinee
It's better in the matinee
The dark of the matinee is mine
Yes it's mine

So I'm on BBC2 now, telling Terry Wogan how I made it
What I made is unclear now, but his deference is and his laughter is
My words and smile are so easy now
Yes, It's easy now
Yes, It's easy now

Find me and follow me through corridors, refectories and files
You must follow, leave this academic factory
You will find me in the matinee
The dark of the matinee
It's better in the matinee
The dark of the matinee is mine
Yes it's mine

What Hunter said. Franz Ferdinand (while not Pulp, one of their main influences IMO) has some GREAT lyrics. This one is probably my favorite (at least lyrically). It's from their 2nd album. There's a lot of repetition here and it comes off much better when you hear the song, but there are some great, biting lines here. It's very much of its time and place (i.e. the reference to the "Transmission party" and stuff like that), but it is still great IMO. It's almost Sparks-like in its repetition (well some of their more recent stuff) and cleverness.

Well I woke up tonight and said I
I'm gonna make somebody love me
I'm gonna make somebody love me
And now I know, now I know, now I know
I know that it's you
You're lucky, lucky, you're so lucky!

Well do ya, do ya, do ya wanna?
Well do ya, do ya, do ya wanna?
Wanna go, where I've never let you before?

Well do ya, do ya, do ya wanna?
Well do ya, do ya, do ya wanna?
Want a go, of what I've never let you before?

Well he's a friend and he's so proud of you
He's a friend and I knew him before you, oh yeah
Well he's a friend and we're so proud of you
Your famous friend, well I blew him before ya, oh yeah

Well do ya, do ya, do ya wanna?
Well do ya, do ya, do ya wanna?
Wanna go, where I've never let you before?

Well here we are at the transmission party
I love your friends they're all so arty, oh yeah

Well I woke up tonight and said I
I'm gonna make somebody love me
I'm gonna make somebody love me
And now I know, now I know, now I know
I know that it's you
You're lucky lucky, you're so lucky!

Well do ya, do ya, do ya wanna?
Well do ya, do ya, do ya wanna?
Want a go, of what I've never let you before?

Lucky lucky, you're so lucky
Lucky lucky, you're so lucky
Lucky lucky, you're so lucky
Lucky lucky, you're so lucky

Lucky lucky, you're so lucky
Oh lucky lucky, you're so lucky
Yeah!

The "Matinee" song is an exception but I do find most of their lyrics to be shite. If I'm "on crack" Hunter, I'd rather be on crack w/o the Ferdinands in my discography. And Oasis are far worse but even Noel admits to not giving a shit about lyrics.
