On my walk to work this morning I listened to Fleetwood Mac’s TUSK for the first time ever. Well, most it at least. I finished side 4 on my lunch hour. As a guy who appreciates well crafted pop music, I can’t believe I slept on this record for so long. It is a damn near perfect combination of songwriting, arranging, production and playing -just gorgeous. But I’m old enough to remember all the hype and the subsequent backlash when it came out. How they spent a fortune and how it was too long and how Lindsey Buckingham made every one crazy with his wacky ideas and perfectionism. And then it was all about what a financial disaster it was, only selling 4 million copies (at a list price of $16, in 1979) compared to Rumors’ 13 million. All you hear 36 years later is a perfect pop record.
As far as the Sandinista comparison goes...well, it is the indulgent, extravagant follow up to a band’s critical and commercial breakthrough. Except that Tusk is great.
