Seasonal records/bands (not holiday-related)

Seasonal records/bands (not holiday-related)

Postby worldismyfuse » Mon Dec 22, 2014 9:17 am

I was listening to Big Star today and it made me think of a friend of mine who once said something to the effect of "they are a great summer band", stating that summer should be the time you listen to Big Star. And I've known a few other people who have said they only listen to certain bands or records during certain times or seasons. (Another friend, "I only listen to Joy Division when it is raining or it's snowing").

Big Star is a great summer band, but I like listening to them spring, fall, and/or winter.

I don't really care much for the season when listening to bands/records I like, but, obviously, some people do. I was curious if anyone has a band or record they only listen to at a certain time (or place)?

I've never understood listening to music because of the season.

While I don't really get seasonal bands either, you can't beat driving to a skate spot in the summer listening to Agent Orange.

growing up in los angeles, i never had any seasons, so no. now i live in a place where there are variations in climate, but i still don't let the weather dictate my listening choice. always seemed weird to me.

I have lots of records that I consider 'seasonal'

I listen to way more Punk Rock in the summer.
In the winter months tons of Jazz & stuff like Joy Division, Nick Cave & Mark Lanegan.....

The Bicycle Thief album is a total summer listen, I never rock that album in cold months....

Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett are great when the winter is ending & the Spring is starting to peek thru.

I listen to Reggae pretty much every day during the summer & almost never in Winter.

Most NYHC reminds me of the end of summer & Fall arriving.

THE FALL are a great seasonal band. Some records go down well in summer(Dragnet, The Unutterable) & some better in winter(Hex Enduction Hour, Grotesque) and almost every time better late at night then during the day.

That's funny. I consider Dragnet a winter record.

The Unutterable is a winter record for me, too, but I think that has to do with when I first heard it. Otherwise, I quite agree with much of what drew wrote on this topic.

I have seasonal attachments to certain songs or bands based mostly on events from my past that that music was a soundtrack to. Things like The Meatmen, Naked Raygun, Government Issue, JFA, etc remind me of skating in the summertime and the Skinny Puppy Vivisect VI album reminds me of rainy October days and fall/winter.
