Are You Experienced vs. Are You Experienced

Are You Experienced vs. Are You Experienced

UK? US? French? Mono? Stereo?

I have not heard the American mono version, but I grew up on the US stereo version. I kind of prefer the American tracklisting, at least I prefer all the songs not on the UK version to "Red House". Even so, my favorite version overall is the '70s French mono pressing. This record was originally mixed and released in mono only, and I think that's where it really shines. The mono sounds a lot more like a band and less like a showcase for Jimi, which is a good thing.

Recently, on Tom Lyle's recommendation, I bought this to replace the 70's US stereo pressing that was stolen from me some years ago.

It sounds frikkin fantastic. I've heard that all of the Experience Hendrix represses are worthwhile.

I've heard good things about all of those, except AYE mono, unfortunately. I'd really like to be able to buy a cheap new copy of that one.

I have the current EH vinyl 180g of the 3 Experience albums in Stereo. They're all good and well done. Don't have any vintage pressings to compare them to though, but prefer them over the late 90s EH CDs. The old Non-RE-1, non-NR'd 80s Reprise CDs are good too, but those are a lot more difficult to find, so I really don't see the point in recommending them over the easily available EH vinyl.

If there is one minor thing I don't like about the EH vinyl, it's the thick pink poly inner sleeves they use. They tend to scratch up the record. I'd recommend replacing them with a high quality, scratch resistant inner sleeve. I use Diskeeper 2.0 square or the 1.5 round bottom sleeves on all my records now and those are good as well as inexpensive.

I've never heard the Mono one. I have an old stereo pressing and one of the more modern deluxe reissues and they both sound good to me.

This is the version I grew up on (U.S. stereo) and actually I recently procured a 2nd press of it for $10. It sounds great, but I've always wanted to hear the U.S. mono version, too. I don't really like the UK track listing nearly as much, so I'm curious what the order is on the French version.

I was supposed to get some of these a few years back from Legacy, but it never happened. It still may at some point. I hope so because I'd love to hear them and they are pricy!

No, sir. They're easily found under $20, and with the slightest effort can be had for less than $15.

Oh? Two-tone labels?

The French version is the UK tracklisting, just mastered better (allegedly).

Let's break it down.

UK Exclusive Tracks
Red House
Can You See Me
Remember

US Exclusive Tracks
Purple Haze
Hey Joe
The Wind Cries Mary

Analysis
Red House is probably my least favorite Hendrix track. Purple Haze I've heard so many times that I don't really need to hear it again. The other four are all excellent. The ones from the UK version make for a more rockin' record while the ones from the US version are a little more mellow.

Decision
It's a draw. Don't be an asshole, get both.

To get back on topic, UK (or French) mono + US stereo. Anything else is pure lunacy.

I believe so. I'll have to double check, though, but I'm almost positive.

Yesterday I received the purple haze vinyl copy of this that I ordered awhile back (limited to 1500 numbered copies). I haven't had a chance to open it and play it yet though.
