Iconic Album Covers

Postby Janelle » Sun Oct 12, 2014 5:36 am

Your faves?

Was listening to 'Super Black Market Clash' last night after the Rangers game and just thinking of that iconic 'London Calling' album cover. For me the definitive punk cover. Others that quickly came to mind were Ramones s/t, Minor Threat, Rancid '...And Out Come the Wolves' (I know you all LOVE!!! that), Dead Kennedys Plastic Surgery Disasters always got me. Very incomplete list - what do you say?

London Calling would be disqualified on the grounds of it being ripped off an Elvis Presley record. Likewise, the Rancid one is ripped off Minor Threat.

Not an album, but the Fix's Jans Rooms 7" cover is iconic--I even lobbied for it to be used as the cover for the T&G CD reissue.

Big Black had great album covers
Clash - S/T
Half Japanese - 1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts
Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bollocks--it's hard to get more iconic than that
V/A - 30 Over DC

Thank you.

Really? I don't recall Elvis smashing any guitars. They took the typeface, that's it. No one thinks it's a great cover based on the effing typeface. Get real, guys.

Re: Iconic Album Covers

Postby FlexMyHead » Tue Oct 14, 2014 6:30 am

I vaguely remember a feature in MRR that had a feature on best LP covers and I think they picked Husker Du's "Zen Arcade". I think they were looking at it more as "art" than "icon" though. I think it's tough to come up with a good cover and then put the dumb band name (99% are dumb) and album title (99% are dumb) and still make it look good.

Was this the message board that had some challenge where you'd go to google, do random page, pick the tenth word have that be the band name, then do the same for title and photo and then post the results? That was fun.

EDIT:

Here it is...who is brave enough to go first??

A fun way to name your band, choose your album cover art and name your album, with a little bit of randomness, and some help from Wikipedia, Flickr and Quotationspage.

Here are the rules:
1.Go to Wikipedia and hit “random” and the first article you get is the name of your band.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
2. The last four or five words will be the title of your new album.
http://cubemonkey.net/quotes/
3.Go to Flickr and click on “Explore the Last Seven Days”. The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
https://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days

EDIT:

Uh. Picking a font from PAINT fucking sucks. Every font I picked ended up looking like a font a co-worker would use for a happy hour flyer or some shit.

Image

Well, on the bright side I realize I have little idea as to what font to use for a band/title and I now know what Rifnik Hill is and I check out some photos from Toyama, Japan.

I know a guy who basically wall-papered an entire room of his house with copies of this cover he found in Salvation Army bins for like .50¢ a piece.

It's absolutely a tribute/link. Not saying that disqualifies it, but it's def not 100% original.

Kinks - The Kink Kontroversy

Sleater-Kinney did a tribute to it on Dig Me Out and I believe a few other bands have as well.

Then you could say many 50s and 60s Blue Note album covers were/are iconic, since the whole style has been copied so many times over.

Sure, it's an homage, but it's the picture that makes it iconic. Take away the typeface and it would be even better, IMO.

SNFU - ... and no one else wanted to play (Dianne Arbus photo tweaked just enough)
Dag Nasty - can i say
Youth of Today - we're not in this alone (early press) - defined the whole '88 thing so well
Discharge - never again
Amebix - the entire early discography
Icons of Filth - onward christian soldiers
Septic Death - now that I have your attention
Cro-mags - age of quarrel
Judge - ny crew - copied by so many (not an album, but whatever)

The cover of Lifetime's Hello Bastards is an, ahem, tribute to the cover of The Housemartins' London O' Hull 4.

Original EP version obviously. The Lp version (though I love it) has a shall, we say, less iconic punk cover. It looks like the cover of a new wave album.

actually, yeah, the LP version. the "new wave" look is what stands it apart from the other HC records of the time. love the contrast between the arty cover and the music within.

Agree with that. I remember buying the Walk Together LP and was kind of skeptic about how will it sound because I only had The Crew before that. Speaking of The Crew, maybe not iconic, but pretty cool album cover.

DEFINITIVE.

Designer Ray Lowry acknowledge the design's inspiration when he said, "It was intended as a genuine homage to the original unknown genius who created Elvis Presley's first rock 'n' roll record."

I have already acknowledged that's it's an homage. However, that has ZERO PERCENT to do with what's actually iconic about it, which is 100% the Pennie Smith photograph. Take off the shitty Evis homage lettering and it's actually improved.

Disagree. All the elements - the layout, the typography, the photo - are important to how well the cover works or not. And if they hadn't done the Elvis homage, I doubt that the cover would be anywhere near as recognizable as it is today - no more so than any other Clash record at any rate.

Smell the Glove for the Kewpie Doll :!: Danny, I'm told by a good source that the banana on the VU & Nico album was an in-joke. Supposedly Cale was a real prankster and was always leaving his banana peels around the Factory floor for Andy to slip on - , Oh to be a non-junked-out fly on that wall seeing Warhol's wig flying off. ;)
