Yeah, I have a hard time choosing. If I'm out-voted on another album, I'll be okay with the verdict.

Would be a killer band for RIOT FEST 2015. I'm just saying, it's about time.

I actually bought the s/t today on vinyl because it had a track or two that wasn't on the CD version. I don't think I've ever heard the others, perhaps I'll check them out on streaming.

I think I still have the Generation X bootleg 7" somewhere. The one that was released before any of their official records...

Alas I can't say the same for my Spunk LP. Sold that years ago...

The UK version is the standard, I'd say. It came out first and the track listing wasn't fucked up with a John Lennon cover.

You crazy. The correct answer is clearly the s/t (US version) and I say this as someone who owns all 3 albums in multiple formats (vinyl and CD).

That's the track listing I like the most because I first heard it on cassette that way when I was 18. And their cover of "Gimme Some Truth" absolutely rules. Sorry, but it's a better tune than something like "Listen" (one of the ones they left off the US version).

This is the wrongest you've ever been, and that's saying something. Because you fucked up when you were 18 everyone else should too? That's solid reasoning. I bought the right one when I was 10 or 11, so if we're going by precedent, my history trumps your history. Let's focus on correcting our mistakes, not perpetuating them. Otherwise, we might as well all sign up for the Conservative Punk newsletter.

You bought the UK one when you were 10? Seriously? If so, I am impressed. I didn't find that version (which I own on both vinyl and CD, BTW) until my early 20s. I just happened to find the cassette version for cheap when I was 18 and loved it, though I'd already heard some of the stuff before that. In general, I don't like it when U.S. labels fuck up the U.K. track order, but this is one exception.

Also, confession time: I've never been able to get into Valley of the Dolls. I think the title track is great, as is "Running with the Boss Sound" and "King Rocker". Maybe I need to revisit it.

That's just the one they had at the record store. I probably didn't even realize there was a different US version until I started seeing used copies in record stores in the last 10 years.

A Generation X Reunion will never happen with original guitarist/songwriter Bob Derwood Andrews after Billy & Tony cheated him silly in never giving him any songwriting cred or royalties for his writing "Dancing with myself". And have you seen the dude who wears a rubber Billy Idol mask lately who's doing press for his book lately :?: That cat ain't Billy Idol. I bet there will be no chapter in the book about how afraid Billy & others were of The English Beat (+ their crew) when they gigged with them early on. The wussies were so scared that they left all their gear onstage & ran out of the club leaving English Beat some new equipment. Bottom line: Generation X were a great band & put out great albums/singles. Gen X was pretty good & put out a pretty good "12. Billy Idol tried hard to be a teen idol solo act but soon was remade into Punk Rock KISS by KISS management. He's a big buffoon, pussyhound, pothead that nobody should give the time of day.

I sold my original copy god knows when. I replaced it a few years ago with a first press complete with the OBI. It's a little rough around the edges, but it was cheap. It's a Porky Prime Cut, too, so that's a nice bonus.

A lot of the first records I bought were Porky Prime Cuts. Imagine how pleased I was when our first 7" came back from the plant in '95 with 'Porky Prime Cut' inscribed into the matrix with a message on each side. "Short as life is we make it even shorter with the careless waste of time" and "Strangely enough it's often cranks that start revolutions".

I have heard stories about Billy being really scared hanging out at the 100 Club (or other London punk clubs) and places like that when there were Rastafarians and Don Letts played reggae. He thought they would all get mugged, etc. Thus, I believe this. I didn't know that about Derwood, though. Too bad! He's my favorite member of that band (by some distance).

Yes, JGJR, Billy may act all "bad boy claiming to smoke tons of pot" but is scared silly of the Rastas. You know, I think the Generation X BBC 1 sessions is even better than the 1st album. And, man do I love their rendition of Lennon's Gimme Some Truth :!:

Apparently, little Billy's current live set has half-Generation X in it but fuck all if this Generation X fan is going to see that crapweasel.

I've never paid much attention to these guys, so I pulled up a Greatest Hits on Spotify for my walk home. I liked it a lot - they've got really catchy songs and a great sound (I'm a sucker for that chugga-chugga crunch). But give me some historical perspective, please. These guys were considered a joke, right? I mean, it totally smacks of opportunistic 'poseur' punk. I can only assume that if you were a fan of the Clash, Pistols, Damned, etc. in 1978 that you laughed at Billy Idol and his mates. Am I right?

Not me. I loved this stuff especially the first LP. I think it ranks up there with the first Clash, Buzzcocks, or Undertones LPs.

They did take a little bit of shit early on for being pretty boys who were unapologetic about wanting to be pop-stars, but they were such a good band in terms of playing and songwriting, they were able to prove their critics wrong. Many, many later bands have cited them as a huge influence - Dag Nasty and Descendents to name two.

What jaybird said, but also, they had some cred, since Billy had been in Chelsea and Tony was in London SS. Billy was also part of the Bromley Contingent, so he had been part of the scene from very early on.

scanny, you've really missed out on an amazing group from the UK punk era  But never too late to discover greatness. I've always dug them but was originally disappointed by the follow up to S/T brilliance in Valley of the Dolls. His initial solo-attempt as Bill Jett (that Joan growl/howl he seriously copped) doing "Mony Mony" was pretty embarrassing. Took me some time to really dig the big solo record (as much as it was catchy) that his MTV pop-star songs like "Dancing" & "Eyes without a Face" were lame. That "Rebel Yell" rock-crap is still crap to this fan. When I found out about Billy & Tony burning Derwood (and who doesn't love the Empire stuff he did after splitting Generation X :?: ) so badly. Screw that assclown & his "I'M MR. PUNKROCK, AGAIN". In the words of Paul Cook (when I asked him what he thought of The Damned) "Think he's a facking joke!"

In the words of Paul Cook (when I asked him what he thought of The Damned) "Think he's a facking joke!"

i love all three of the generation x records - but was put off entirely by idol's solo career. oddly enough - the one i listen to most these days is valley of the dolls...but i also have a bootleg from that early era called untouchables, and it is amazing.
