Boston hardcore 1981. - 1984.

So, there is a lots of talk about early Boston hardcore punk bands.
Which are your favorite bands?

Mine is definitely Negative Fx. Even though some other early Boston bands had their original sound, I think that Negative Fx stands out with their manic fast hardcore (but still it wasn´t just tuneless thrash) in 1982. Except for DRI, nobody played like that at the time.
Also, just because their LP was released in 1984. (which was recorded in 1982.) when they were already broken up, I think that the LP didn´t received a "classic" status like some other hc/punk records from that time (1980. - 1983.). So, because of that, Negative Fx were more influential for some later generations of hc/punk kids (from Infest to some grind core bands), at least that is mine impression.

As for other early Boston bands, I´m into Jerry´s Kids, DYS, Gang Green (Boston, not LA tracks), The Freeze, SSD (first two records), Last Rights, Vile... Siege also if they fall into that period, or were they later generation?
Never was into FU´s that much, but I think they are solid band... Deathwish and Impact Unit are also OK...

to me, 90 percent of the old boston bands were great, or at least good. i am having a hard time thinking of stuff that is just average. stuff like the freeze and proletariat doesn't thrill me like nfx or siege, but it's still good punk rock for the most part. after 84 it became a different story though. ssd, fu's, siege, deep wound(if you count them), dys, negative fx, last rights would be at the top of the heap for me.

Yeah, Deep Wound also, even though they are from Western Mass.

To be fair, Western Mass is only about an hour away from Boston. Void were from Columbia, MD (30-45 minutes outside DC), but are widely considered a DC band. So...close enough.

yeah, i mean, i would always consider void and scream(i think they were out from outside dc too) as dc bands too. east coast people get all anal about that kind of shit for some reason with punk bands. if you made someone realize the true location of the band they called LA punk(like the minutemen) you wouldn't get very far.

Jerry's Kids because they made "Is This My World?" and that is my absolute favorite Boston record.
Deep Wound because the 7" is super awesome and a personal favorite (and plus I'm a Mascis nerd).
The Proletariat is awesome and writing this makes me want to put on that 2xCD.
And I've always really like The Freeze and I never felt they got the attention they deserved. Some really incredible, memorable songs.

Scream were from Baileys Crossing, VA. To be completely fair, though, San Pedro is still within the (obviously very large; geographically speaking) boundary of LA, though far from Hollywood, etc. and at its very southern-most point basically.

Original G.I. :Marc, Brian, me (MD) & John (MD/DC border.) Artificial Peace (MD), Red C: Eric , Tomas, Pete ( MD), and Toni (DC), Marginal Man (MD) I resided in VA (Dischord House) in late '81 till went back home to MD. Then in '83 moved in with Tom in DC (everyone except Mitch & Mike who lived in DC) in G.I. line-ups lived in MD. I even moved into group houses from hell in MD from '84-early '86 till moving back to DC (winter '86-'89) during the last line-up. You could say G.I. was probably the most sketchy to call ourselves "from WDC". Next chapter: Minor Threat. ;)

Is everyone well confused now :?:

Yes (to the first question). I just thought it was one of the DC things that's more mythical or impossible to find than a realistic request until I remembered they were (I think) on This is Boston Not LA, hence my correction.

I don't really give a fook about Pea Soup. Based on all descriptions, it sounds pretty uninteresting. I'd love to hear the Insurrection demo, though. I like the live set I got from obik.

Not like that, no.
I mean, there was bunch of European bands also playing manic fast hardcore in 82, but not as good as NFX or DRI.
And OK, there was Void already doing that in 1981.

Negative FX were pretty much generic Boston Crew hardcore. I bought that record when it came out and certainly didn't feel like I was hearing anything I hadn't heard 100 times before. I like it and always have, but it's not groundbreaking in any way.

That was also my point, because the LP came out in 1984. If it was released in 1982. when it was recorded it would probably be considered a classic.
But that´s just my opinion. As I´ve said before, I like some other Boston stuff too, Jerry´s Kids, DYS, early Gang Green, The Freeze, Deep Wound, SSD...

I consider it a classic, I just don't think it was all that unique, even in 1982. Remember, the Minor Threat EPs came out in 1981 and endless bands followed their lead shortly thereafter.

Morning! So, has anyone got the recently released archival Deathwish 12" yet? Just curious if it lives up to the killer Tailgate 7"ep? And there is also mentioned on the site of an expected Deathwish 7" too. Just a bummer that you have to buy the 2 12"s as a package as previously mentioned. Is it Deathwish or Death Wish?! Thanks!

Not my rip, got it from another board. It's the Deathwish 12" of the 1983 session. Like 8 minutes long.

Also, i'll take Septic Death over any Boston HC, and 90% of HC in general.

Many thanks. I'll still buy the 12" if I see it in a distro. Has anyone heard The Loved Ones?
