Sometimes my favorite Danzig band.

Samhain were awesome. Some dummies don't appreciate them, though. To those dummies I say "hey dummy, your taste is shit".

Some of my fondest memories growing up were related to discovering this band's releases. I will never forget me and my buddy Dan Robertson being creeped the fuck out when spinning "Initium/Samhain" for the first time. Things were so much better pre-internet, when you had no idea what these dudes looked like except for the crappy blurry pictures in the sleeves. I mean, were they men or were they monsters?

Play the albums on 45, sounds just like the Misfits.

Best excuse for not liking them: "the production"

Play them on 33 and it sounds just like the Misfits, especially Initium. People who think there is a difference between Samhain, The Misfits, and plain old Glenn Danzig are double dummies.

samhain just aren't that good. some good songs, but too many "meh" ones. and yeah the production doesn't really do them justice, or danzig's guitar playing.if they had had the rick rubin production of danzig one i think they would be better.

I remember my freshman year in college (1987), I started hanging out with this other dude who was way more "in the know" about the scene than I was at the time, came over to my dorm room one afternoon, babbling excitedly about how the guy who had produced the Cult's Electric album was now working with Samhain, and was gonna make them sound like AC/DC or something on the next record. I was like "whatever/sounds stupid" and dismissed it until I heard Danzig S/T the next year and was floored.

YES. I have to ignore enough ALL/Descendents/Samiam/Bad Religion/DBL posts without having them injected into a post about a band I acutally give a shit about. One joke is fine, but all too often that kind of shit ends up taking over the thread. I know topicality is not one of our strong points, but if you really want to talk about a band that has nothing to do with the thread, just start a new thread.

I'm not the biggest Glenn Danzig fan, admittedly, but I think Samhain's songs are weak. I thick his vocal phrasing sometimes, like the rhythm and cadence, are sometimes okay, but thats like the only hook I hear in the songs. The production IS bad, and only got worse on the second record. Put it this way: the Cure's Pornography record is way more gothic, has much better songwriting, and is still way more heavy than Samhain.

As a positive opinion, I basically think that Glenn Danzig is a great rock and roll musician. The best stuff with the Misfits called back to the 50's and 60's. I personally love how the original single for She doesn't have guitar and reminds you of stuff like Del Shannon or something. Danzig showcased a more complex heavy rock sound, but it was still essentially a straight forward approach, blues based rootsy stuff. I think he is at his best in that kind of straight on kind of band, and Samhain was too fuzzy and unfocussed and experimental to be any good- just my opinion.

I have a confession....Danzig bores me to tears now.

this is a pointless argument, because for some reason samhain fans tend to think this was danzig's best band for one reason or another, and will not listen to anything negative said about them.i am in the category of liking the misfits/danzig solo, but unlike most of his fans i have no interest in seeing him do half assed versions of his best songs with some scrubs. i don't get why most people won't recognize that john christ, von and biscuits were the real talent and backbone of danzig. if he was such a good songwriter he would have released at least one good album since 1994.

I've heard Danzig pronounce it both ways. In the song "Samhain" he says "Sow-when", but I think he also realizes that most people will look at Samhain and think "Sam Hane" and he's not going to bother correcting it.

I love the band, personally. I get the complaints about the production and the musicianship but I love his songwriting (even if his lyrics get silly) and his voice . After he started Danzig, he adopted a bit more of a crooning style, which mostly works well in that band but I dig his earlier vocals better.

I saw Black Sabbath and Pantera that year, too. Here's the setlist for the show I went to.

Apparently Deftones also played, but I have no memory of seeing them there. I also have no memory of Evan Seinfeld coming out to sing with Pantera, but it doesn't matter as I was there to see Black Sabbath anyway.

Love Samhain. I got tix for the Nov. 1 NYC show. I used to say Samhain were my #1 Danzig band but I don't know now. Nevertheless I love all that stuff SO much. After I bought the ticket a couple weeks ago I was just putting all those CDs in my car. <3 Esp. the Unholy Passion EP and I have a special weird thing for Final Descent. But can anything truly surpass "The Howl"??????!!

"The Howl", "The Shift", "Archangel". All great. I think the biggest problem most people have with Samhain is that it's not catchy like The Misfits. They mistake actually trying something new for a failure in songcraft. No, Samhain doesn't have that classic R'n'R vibe that The Misfits did, and that is because Glenn was specifically going for more of a post-punk sound. The guy doesn't do things accidentally.

I love the Samhain records and think the production on the second and third was fine (the remixed/partially re-recorded version of the Unholy Passion EP on the CDs actually sounded better than the original version on the vinyl) but the production on the first album was very muddy. I loved the photos and artwork on the records too.

If I bother to wander over to watch a little of their set at Riot Fest this weekend I don't have very high hopes that suddenly Glenn isn't going to be winded after a couple of songs and does a better job than he has recently in his Danzig shows. And of course he's not suddenly going to realize what an asshole he is for his ridiculous anti-photography stance. I will have a long telescope type lens so I may snap a few shots from the crowd with it if I can just a giant middle finger to him.

I've said this for years, but I need to give the later records another chance. I had a dub of November Coming Fire as a kid and I didn't really like it, but since then I have grown to like the post-punk sound much more. Then again, I did like that sound as a kid, too, so maybe it didn't click with me for another reason. I'd be curious to revisit it, but just haven't done it. I did try Initium in recent years and didn't dig it at all.

I love, love, love SAMHAIN!! All the records are great, even "Final Descent" It was a different thing than MISFITS I never really compare them. I even like the re-done Misfits tunes. I love everything Glenn did all the way up to "Danzig II:Lucifuge" and some of the stuff on the third album.

That said, I'm not going anywhere near this show.

This was the first post I ever made that was in that legendary "Daghouse style" and I got called out for it! It's a day of victory.

In all seriousness, though, I do like Samhain and I had it not been a curling league night, I'd be at the show in NYC on 11/1 (yes - I actually just said "curling league night").

I can remember buying a bunch of Misfits & Samhain records all at once back in my budding punk rock years - directly from Plan 9.....this was probably in late '86. I think I saw an ad in Forced Exposure or something and bought Earth A.D./Wolfsblood, Die Die My Darling 12", Legacy of Brutality, Initium, Unholy Passion 12", and November-Coming Fire in one shot.

Nowadays, I'd definitely say I liked the Misfits more than Samhain, but, at that time, the Samhain records appealed more to me (maybe not so surprising given the Misfits records I had acquired in that purchase), with November-Coming-Fire probably being my favorite of the bunch.

Even back then, I loved the dungeon-like production of it all.

i guess i should say at the end of the day i am by no means a huge danzig guy. i have a lot of his records, but aside from having a cool voice and gimmick i never really thought of him as some kind of musical prodigy that many of his fans seem to do. i think the misfits wrote some damn great songs and that was by far his best stuff. i even like earth AD a lot, but i probably listen to the misfits a few times a year at most. i think the first three danzig records have a cool vibe, but the first one is the best and they def get worse as you go down the line. i saw danzig in like 2003 and he opened with his korn sounding solo stuff and my friend make me leave the show since his wife was falling asleep. i saw him again in 2006 and doyle came out looking like a fool and they did some decent misfits covers and he sounded pretty good, but i was kind of done with him after that. from footage i have seen, he seems to have lost his voice anyway.
