Play the albums on 45, sounds just like the Misfits.

yourenotevil wrote:samhain just aren't that good. some good songs, but too many "meh" ones. and yeah the production doesn't really do them justice, or danzig's guitar playing.if they had had the rick rubin production of danzig one i think they would be better.

Nope. Samiam gets 10 times more press around here than Samhain, so keep them in their own fucking thread.

version sound wrote:YES. I have to ignore enough ALL/Descendents/Samiam/Bad Religion/DBL posts without having them injected into a post about a band I acutally give a shit about. One joke is fine, but all too often that kind of shit ends up taking over the thread. I know topicality is not one of our strong points, but if you really want to talk about a band that has nothing to do with the thread, just start a new thread.
jason powell wrote:I'm not the biggest Glenn Danzig fan, admittedly, but I think Samhain's songs are weak. I thick his vocal phrasing sometimes, like the rhythm and cadence, are sometimes okay, but thats like the only hook I hear in the songs. The production IS bad, and only got worse on the second record. Put it this way: the Cure's Pornography record is way more gothic, has much better songwriting, and is still way more heavy than Samhain.
As a positive opinion, I basically think that Glenn Danzig is a great rock and roll musician. The best stuff with the Misfits called back to the 50's and 60's. I personally love how the original single for She doesn't have guitar and reminds you of stuff like Del Shannon or something. Danzig showcased a more complex heavy rock sound, but it was still essentially a straight forward approach, blues based rootsy stuff. I think he is at his best in that kind of straight on kind of band, and Samhain was too fuzzy and unfocussed and experimental to be any good- just my opinion.

version sound wrote:"The Howl", "The Shift", "Archangel". All great. I think the biggest problem most people have with Samhain is that it's not catchy like The Misfits. They mistake actually trying something new for a failure in songcraft. No, Samhain doesn't have that classic R'n'R vibe that The Misfits did, and that is because Glenn was specifically going for more of a post-punk sound. The guy doesn't do things accidentally.

MXV wrote:I love the Samhain records and think the production on the second and third was fine (the remixed/partially re-recorded version of the Unholy Passion EP on the CDs actually sounded better than the original version on the vinyl) but the production on the first album was very muddy. I loved the photos and artwork on the records too.
If I bother to wander over to watch a little of their set at Riot Fest this weekend I don't have very high hopes that suddenly Glenn isn't going to be winded after a couple of songs and does a better job than he has recently in his Danzig shows. And of course he's not suddenly going to realize what an asshole he is for his ridiculous anti-photography stance. I will have a long telescope type lens so I may snap a few shots from the crowd with it if I can just a giant middle finger to him.
