Jesus H. Christ. Stop skimming and start actually reading. I never once argued that the Sex Pistols weren't a punk band. Details are not your bag, are they?

JGJR wrote:And more to the point, if you didn't know it was Ryan Adams and just heard it randomly, you'd probably say it was a punk record, at least by 2014 standards.

NO.

I really did think you said they weren't a punk band, but your other comments almost make the argument by default. Still, my fault on that one. Now can we drop this? Why is it so important anyway?

No they don't. The reason that I bother to draw a line between punk and non-punk in 2014 is that I'm sick and fucking tired of the post-Nirvana era of mainstream assholes trying to increase their cred by making some reference to punk, be it through a t-shirt, interview, recording, whatever. I'm so fucking sick of punk rock being worn like a pair of vintage Air Jordans. Fuck all the jerk-offs who want to capitalize on the retroactive coolness of punk rock post-Nirvana. I hope they all get beat up by a bunch of jocks.

Edit/PS: I don't necessarily put Adams in this category. His affection for Double Negative goes a long way with me.

Saw Ryan Adams on Ellen today. His shirt was way cooler than the song he sang.

Don't bring the Nils into this !!!

Adams is a dabbler dilettante aping early Westerberg...it's not even close to
a revelation or mind blowing or fucking "Hardcore punk" whatsoever.

I imagine if another wave of alt-country rolls by at the public hype beach
Ryan Adams will be hanging 10 it for all it's worth....

Caught him on Jools Holland over here a couple of weeks back. Thought of this place while enjoying the Black Flag shirt/Misfits jean jacket patch outfit combo being worn during the ripping off that Dag Nasty chorus. :D

Yes he dabbles in lots of different genres, but on what planet is the AOR type stuff he lauds (or RATT for that matter) popular, hip or cool in any way? The dude just loves music (and Westerberg in particular but that's been evident his whole career IMO).

I must agree. That's a Jazzmaster, right? That is the guitar of Costello, Malkmus, Mascis and other greats.

And this reminds me that I'm not a gearhead and frequently forget who plays what type of guitar, etc.?

Yeah, I'm a guitar dork. Especially when it comes to Jazzmasters and Jaguars.

Then maybe you can help me figure out if the Jag I bought was properly set up by the store I bought it from (I did pay for a setup).

A lot of shops have no clue how to set-up a Jag/JM properly. Here's a bridge FAQ. That seems to be the bit that gives people the most trouble.

VS, I had the shop put a Staytrem bridge on the guitar. No problems with string slippage or buzzing so far (fingers crossed), but I'm a neophyte at guitar and have only had this particular guitar for a couple of weeks. I bought it so I could have something to play while my other guitar was in the shop.

What's your other guitar? I played Jazzmasters for about 20 years and tried a Jag as a second guitar about 5 different times, but I was never good at switching between the two scale lengths. I finally committed to a Jag as my main/only guitar a year or two ago and couldn't be happier with it.

VS, my other guitar is a Gretsch 5620. I could see how switching between two different scale lengths could be annoying. I just got my Gretsch back from the shop (was having some work done) so I'll see if it feels too different after playing the Jag for a couple weeks.

my 2 cents in regard to the 1984 record - I like it. With Whiskeytown and his solo stuff, I always felt it was hit or miss, liking some, not caring for a lot (and getting bored with most alt. country rather quick). The stuff I've really enjoyed has been the songs with a more 'Mats influence, and this is why I like this 1984 ep. I think it is well done, and, honestly, I've kind of wanted him to release something like this, just to see how he'd do a more punk-tinged thing. I agree with an earlier post and wish a couple of the tracks were just a little longer, but overall I like the short-quick approach. Now that I've played this a handful of times, I say good record.

I have it on right now and it's my 2nd listen of the morning. "Change Your Mind," "Rats in the Wall" and "Broken Eyes" are just...I'm just speechless at how great they are.
