this is an attempt to start a books threat on the new board?

what have you been reading lately? would you recommend it?

I recently helped organize a book club. Doing so kind of kick-started my reading habit...here's what i've read lately.

4. Female Chauvinist Pigs -- Ariel Levey

5. The Burgess Brothers, Elizabeth Strout

It was great and I'd def recommend it.

These threads always make me realize just how little I read. I've gotta change that but it's so hard to read when the kids are around. I find myself going over the same paragraph for 10 minutes.

I've been on a huge reading kick lately, reading about a book a week. I read every night before going to sleep. Sometimes it's for an hour, sometimes ten minutes. It helps my brain calm down and get ready for sleep.

Graham Parker liked this book so much he wrote a song about it with the same title. It's not one of his better songs, but it fits in nicely with other anti-religious screeds or sentiments in his back catalog.

I will read myself to sleep most nights, too, but I'm still about halfway into this great but very dense Billy Bragg biography.

Currently reading Nelson Mandela's biography....got a little weepy when I read about his divorce with his first wife.

point blank-it was a biography about lee marvin. read like a first draft and it was pretty worthless.

born on the fourth of july-ron kovic i def respect the guy for what he did, but this was really not well written at all. although the movie had some fictional plot points in it for dramatic effect, his story really came across better in the film with someone like oliver stone collaborating with him on it.

Read this while sitting on the john yesterday.

There's the problem; the more you read, the less you will want to listen to Fallout Boy.

Currently reading "The Savage City" by TJ English and occasionally reading a short story or two out of "The Minority Report and other Classic Stories" by Philip K. Dick.

I don't read much. I've been on Remarque kick lately: "The Night in Lisbon", "The Black Obelisk" and some of his less-known novels. I've got "Dubliners" by James Joyce from the local library so I guess this would be my next read (and first one by this author).

two excellent books by erik larson - the first about the chicago world's fair (and the serial killer who made his home there); the latter about the u.s. ambassador to germany during the rise of hitler's nazi party. both are well worth owning.

i am currently reading:

tbe wrecking crew
a nice read on the legendary musicians who comprised la's 60's studio scene. including one of my all-time favorites, hal blaine. it is amazing how many records this crew played on. and their stories are quite compelling.

on the docket is:

a constellation of vital phenomena
a highly recommended book on the chechen war

I've been on a Bukowski rampage for the last 2 months...I read the following since the beginning of June...

Unfortunately, I don't get to indulge too much fiction. But so far this summer I've managed:



'The Murderess' by Alexandros Papadiamandis. You can't beat a book that ends in a chase scene.

The Real McCoy - Andy McCoy: poorly written but entertaining
We Got Power coffe table book: great
Neighbourhood Threat - Alvin Gibbs: UK Subs' bassist's account of touring with Iggy Pop. Excellent.

Just finished the Real McCoy.Hunteragreed and why did he not talk about Alice Cooper? Have to get that UK Subs one.

I have this book and found it at a flea market a few years ago, but I never read it and now it's packed away in a box. One day I'll get to it. In the meantime, I'm curious how it is. Hopefully, there is lots of Police stuff in there.

All of my books are being put in boxes (we're moving). It is unbelievably distressing to me.

I almost bought an iPad just to play with the Joseph Albers app. I was reading a book on colorimetry last week, the science and philosophy of color is something that has always driven my brain. Finding out about the Interaction of Color as a sort of interactive eBook sounded amazing because I never could afford the kit that places used to sell with the hundreds of bits of colored tissues and stuff, I just have the book with like 8 color plates. The app is beautiful. Alas, I think they are about to release a new iPad in just a bit, so I will wait, but if you already have an iPad, check it out, it is awesome.

Occasionally. But I usually can sense when I'm beginning to drift and then I'll stop.

Tony O'Neill's "Sick City" is the best book I've read since "The Ghosts of Belfast." I couldn't put it down and I was sad when I finished it.
