I haven't used Discogs for my own collection. I didn't know that they offered that valuation feature.
I wouldn't rely on that for insurance purposes though. It would be one form of proof of your collection, but I would check with your insurance company on how they handle insuring collectables such as vinyl. My regular insurance would only give me yard sale value for an LP which is like 25 cents or something ridiculous. However, they had separate collectable items insurance which would cover the actual value, but you have to have the collection valued by a reputable person. That probably doesn't include a punk kid down at the local record store. In the Southeast, the guy for the job is the owner of Bananas records in St. Pete, FL. He will take a trip out to your house and value the collection and is familiar with proving his credentials to the insurance company. Unfortunately, he doesn't specialize in punk, so I have never used the guy. If you have a lot of '60s and '70s stuff, he would be good and isn't super pricey. First, I would call your insurance company to see how they handle this sort of thing.
