[quote="john stabb"]Snake, glad someone else digs that Live TSOL cos I think it's a gem. I used to hate/feel embarrassed about the NO WAY OUT '82 because of the sloppiness in the performance and my coming off so obnoxious. Took me a while to finally see it for a great set of songs (we only practiced briefly w/ Brian before the gig so I like a bit of sloppy punkrock/hardcore happening :!: ) and my own obnoxiousness as a bit of an innocent, naive, challenge to NY. I never held back on what was on my mind then so I recommend the thing highly. ;)

That TSOL live would be perfect if there were more songs from Beneath The Shadows on it.
Anyone has a download link for No Way Out 82?
I suppose buying it would not help any GI members, because it is a sort of bootleg, right?
I have a GI live from Peppermint Lounge NYC, 82. Was that also with Brian? It is a cool live performance.

ALL putting out a live CD after 2 albums and an EP was just dumb. None of the songs were played markedly different than their studio versions. And it was probably the worse ALL show I ever saw (and I can't count how many times I saw them back then). They played really late and Bill was in a super foul mood. Just tons of bad vibes.

Excellent calls on both. I listened to that Kinks records countless times when I was a kid. My obsession with power chords played on a Les Paul through a Marshall probably started right there.

Sounds like I was pretty much right on the money with my prediction then.

I totally forgot about AC/DC - If You Want Blood... what a great album!

I did very much enjoy Government Issue - Live (the LP on Mystic Records). I bought it the day I found it after it was released and I played the hell out of that record for years.

PiL - Live in Tokyo was pretty good too and I got a lot of mileage out of that when i first bought it after it came out.

Bash & Pop - live in S. Dakota (bootleg edog made for me. 8-)
Johnny Thunders & Heartbreakers - Live at the Speakeasy
The Smiths - Thank your Lucky Stars (bootleg edog made me, too  ) -

An interesting list for sure. I've heard rumors that the Ramones album was tracked in the studio except for the drums. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

I haven't heard that Gene album, but I do like them. I got into them after they were done, so I didn't really pay attention to the press saying they were a Smiths ripoff. I see some similarities and influences for sure, but they've basically got their own sound. I'd say Olympian is a 90s classic by now, with the follow up album having some very good songs. I don't know much else by them other than the BBC/B-sides comp. which I haven't heard in a few years.

I'll have to track down that TSOL album and the Smiths boot.

I agree that Joy Division "Live in Amsterdam" is pretty awesome. I find it controlled but very intense. It moves between moods well, like the beginning of Insight is serene then pummels with the electronics. Digital hits hard. Disorder, I would have loved to see them play that song, because I love the way it builds and rages at the end. Transmission sounds great (I single it out because it might be my favorite JD track), Interzone is brutal. It is a great representation of the band and a truly great set.

Many already mentioned, It's Alive being probably my favorite...

GI - Finale! Damn does Pete Moffett slay (and the rest of the band too!)
Radio Birdman - Murder City Nights (bootleg? I think so)
Cheap Trick - Music For Hangovers
Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo and Live 1979 Hammersmith
Motorhead - Live and Loud
Black Flag live at the On Broadway 1982
Stooges Metallic KO
MC5 first lp
Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya Yas Out
the Saints - Live at the Hope and Anchor 1977
Butthole Surfers - Double Live
Misfits Evilive
RKL double live
Poison Idea - Dutch Courage
The Damned live at Shepperton
Yardbirds - Five Live
X (Australia) - live at the Civic/And More

more will come to me as soon as I post.....

This one kills. I think the only London band that could match them at that point was The Damned...maybe.

I love the 1st Damned Lp, but I think the early Saints smoke 'em (and just about everything else).

Agreed both. Funny how "normal" looking guys from Australia could trump the whole London punk scene! JGJR, I wonder if Algy Ward prefers Saints or Damned, having been in both.

He would probably say Tank since he formed it after his stint in The Damned. :-)

But yeah, monster bassist for sure.

I can't confirm for sure, but I am inclined to believe that you are correct or that at least it's not fully live by a long stretch (this was true of many live albums back then, though).

I've never knowingly heard any live Damned from that period (tons from after that, though) unless you're counting their 1st few BBC sessions, so hard to say.

Thanks, MVV & MJH on the live G.I. LP's.

snake, I only own the No Way Out '82 on cassette so can't really help you there. And those weasels wouldn't give us a cent if you bought it from them. :x

And the other Live w/ Brian on guitar would have to be another CBGB gig we did because G.I. never got to play Peppermint Lounge. Probably the gig we played on our NY-Boston mini-tour.

John, this is the blog where I found that GI live. Yeah, it says that Brian was in the band.

I also like bonus live Boycott Stabb tracks on Discography CD. That live has a great version of Sheer Terror. :D

This is totally off topic but since we are talking GI here...
This summer while on tour, I manage to get LYLE on vinyl at some squat´s free shop in Hanover.
Also got some more cool stuff like American Standard - Wonderland CD (original one on Powerhouse Records).

Wow, I need to write them to clear that up because I seriously would remember if G.I. played anywhere in NY (other than: CB's, The Ritz, Lismar Lounge, Maxwell's) Never played Peppermint and I never got to see Black Flag there on one of those DC Punk road trips.

Did you like the LYLE album, Snake :?: Just curious because even though Tom had J. and Pete play on a few tracks, I found his rendition of Joyride with all the over-done drum-sampling to be a bit too NIN for me. Can't say I'm a fan of the 2 solo recordings but I'm also my own worst critic about my recordings.

Ha, ha, can´t say that I´m fan of LYLE, there are some OK songs on it but that´t it. S
Some songs are a bit over the top, as you say.

As for live records, a lot of great ones listed so far.....

I really like:

Kinks, Ramones and AC/DC previously mentioned and one of my absolute favorites in Johnny Winter, Captured Live.

Off the top of my head:

Big Black - Sound of Impact
Bob Devlin - Live at 18th and M
MC5 - Kick Out The Jams
MC5 - Starship
MC5 - Thunder Express (live TV session)
Mr Epp and the Calculations - Live As All Getout (the side recorded at the Met, at least)
Newtown Neurotics - Kickstarting a Backfiring Nation
Nirvana - Unplugged
Pagans - Pink Album (mostly a live radio session)
Ramones - It's Alive
Rocket From The Tombs - The Day The Earth Met...
V/A - Busted at Oz

And I recall having live Lurkers and Buzzcocks albums that I really loved, but can't think of their titles off the top of my head.
